Astra 2E: On Hold At 43.5E

With 2min exposure time my camera uses another 2 minutes to denoise the picture, so i need 4 minutes per picture.

Yes, mine does that too so it takes time to try everything and it eats batteries, plus I haven't seen clear sky (day or night) for several weeks...

Some photography edumacation to fill the pause.

The most important factor to get any pictures at all in my experiments has been
using a really sharp lens even if means the max aperture is smaller. I think it has
to do with how many pixels the light is spread over on the sensor. If four pixels
get all the light you get higher contrast over the background then if nine pixels
or more share the light. You can't get less than four pixels anyway, the sensors use a
"Bayer matrix" to compute the colors that end up in the RGB-values in the finished
image. There might be tricks to get more resolution directly from the raw image
data when converting it to B/W, checking that is halfway down the to-do-list.

The creative paperwork on the lens hood reduced the unwanted straylight by half.
Reflections in a neighbours white fence (lit by streetlights) was added to the light
pollution. A lens with good initial contrast can have trouble with internal reflections
that lowers the contrast if the exposure time is hundreds of seconds compared to just
seconds. Even the tiniest bit of light entering the lens from the side (outside the image
area) will ruin the contrast.

The tripod is a Manfrotto 144B with a 141RC video head. Old stuff and probably
replaced by newer versions now, the video head is also called a "three way head".
Really useful for any kind of photography where stability is neccesary, just a bit
heavy to carry around. The "roll-axis" adjustment can align the camera parallell to
the satellite belt, makes it easier to zoom in and search by just scrolling left/right
instead of going diagonally.

Some android applications using the smartphone sensors to show compass and level
information will be tested soon. If the metall in the tripod doesn't disturb too much
it will make aiming much easier.

The remote control is from Hähnel has a nice function when using B (bulb) for
long exposures.

... yes the grass is still green and growing here. What a silly season!

You don't need to do that. Just take one picture with the lens cap on. 2 minute exposure at the same iso you are using for your pictures. Then just subtract that out in Photoshop. TBH, I found 30 seconds was plenty to image the satellites and if I want to increase this I can just stack them in Photoshop.

1H Beacon update. Now at 19.8E. Now on the arc give or take a fraction of a degree.

It's not a very powerful carrier - the 19.2 Astra beacons adjacent to 1H's are much more prominent even though I'm off them by 0.5° or so.

So, another week or maybe two to get it "on task" then maybe 2E can get a Jump-Start?

I will just switch it off.

Photoshop should be effective enough to correct it. 30s i've tried before and i was only seeing a few satellites. So for me it was certainly not enough. but as said there weren't enough tries to fully confirm this statement.

There are too many rainclouds now anyways. No real fun to make fotos of them ;) ...
My grass is also green, but not growing :)

Cheers for the update Llew. Can you keep an eye on 2E too, just in case there is some movement in due course!! She can't be far off now beginning her transition surely!

Still dancing all alone around the 43.5 /43.6 mark M60. Nowhere to hide from Celestrak, Waveguide and co. (weather permitting) and me :-rofl2

The SES data shows a slowdown !

Code:
SUBJECT: ELEVEN PARAMETER EPHEMERIS FOR Astra-1H/ 52.30 DEG. E

YEAR MONTH DAY HOUR MINUTE SECOND
2014 01 07 22 45 00

THE EPHEMERIS VALUES ARE:

LM0 LM1 LM2
DEG. E DEG/DAY DEG/DAY/DAY
19.8068 -0.3386 0.001560

So i guess 19.x it is

today it will be in 19,6E and stays there..

Didn't they waste a lot of fuel moving 1H about for no apparent reason?

Still appears to be moving East (?)

Who knows how needs and priorities might have changed?

We certainly don't!

@Llew: always the same thing: the TLE data has not been updated yet, so the slowing manoevre is not taken into account. The more recent SES data however shows 1H to be slowing down.
I think tonight we will get confirmation it is stationary at 19.6 East.
The only logical conclusion right now is 19.6 is 1H's "retirement home". Similar to 2D's 28.0 - it's near the regular position, so they are not occupying any other slot and can control it there until they send it into graveyard.

Ah yes, of course. Thanks. That's why I added the query.

only 0.136° /d now... it's there.
