Astra 2G at 28.2E: General Discussion

Im a bit surprised just how feeble the 2G European beam is compared to 2E & 2F Euros as well - one of the frequencies moved overnight has actually gone done half a dB here compared to 28A last night! The other three have only gone up ~0.5dB

Just done some checks here at home on the new interim 2G TP's - TP90 is lower in quality than 89 and 92. I believe that 2G has two levels of PE footprint power-wise, a 'high' and 'medium' level carrier. Can't give actual EiRP levels in dBW as SES don't publish this but possibly TP90 is on lower power, maybe same goes for the migrated TA1 - TA4 TP's.

It is quiet possible that 28 east will become as tight as 19 east within 0.2 to 0.7 degrees of 19.2 east

Yesterday evening 10.964 > 11126 were uniquely strong here, maybe just coincidence but still hoping it really was a move, to a locally better 2G uk beam.

Update, short lived enthusiasm, 10.964 to 11126 all went to black here this evening, looks like good old (aka bad old) 2F uk behaviour.

Everything so far moved to 2G europe shows improved levels, am seeing 94 to 96 % quality.

Yes cazhh, at epoch (morning of 16 June) 28.2° and still moving West. No good clue yet. I rather see the COB info appear at SES !

I reload every hour. ;) But nothing there. No press release, no cob/ephem data, satellite pushed into position to go live a few hours later. The main channels on 2F moved first. Why 2F ?

I assume that the reception we see in Scotland is because the 2E and 2F Euro beams are centered on the UK, whereas the 2G Euro beam is centered on Germany.

I wonder why they didn't use the Spot beam, as they did with the 11307s and 11343s.

Here in Sweden the 2G Euro beam is the strongest by far, which is to be expected. Not quite as strong as the old 2A/2B North beam, though.

Yep, I agree with this. I've posted this pic on other threads but I'll post it here again as it shows quite nicely why 2G Europe beam is a bit of a disappointment in the UK. You can see how the 2E and 2F beams are centred over the UK and how 2G's 45cm dish limit only covers England and Wales.



To be honest I'm also surprised that the 2G Europe beam was used for channels on Sky or Freesat.

I do wonder if at some point these transponders might switch to UK spots at some point in the future, perhaps after the channels on these beams have had a chance to make other arrangements if they need to broadcast to Europe too (although you'd think they'd have had enough time to sort that out - eg. some Eutelsat 28A channels that went to 2F UK spots at the start of the month are now also on a wide beam via Astra 4A at 5E) or maybe even that SES could shift the Europe beam slightly further north like they did with Astra 1N at 19E after complaints that the European beam didn't reach Scandinavia. But you'd think the easiest thing would be to just switch to 2G UK spots and be done with it if these satellites are as flexible as SES make them out to be.

Apologies if this has already been covered but how are 2F and 2G handling the transponder allocation in the 11200 - 11450 band ? Are they splitting 72MHz transponders into 2 either side of a centre frequency (as per E28A) or are they using dedicated 36MHz transponders ? If it's the former it might explain the lower than expected signal levels in this neck of the woods.

Just grabbed this from the DVB tables on 11778 V at 16:20 UTC, and still 11223H and 11263H show E28A TSIDs.

I know someone is going to say these tables are wrong but why would the TSIDs for 11225V and 11265V have been updated to Astra TSIDs and not 11223H and 11263H? Only reason I can think of is they are still on E28A.

I may be wrong, but I think some of the transponder are rented out to different companies. Perhaps they just have not let Sky's EPG team know about the changes yet?

You may well have a point that explains why I'm not seeing the same results as 2E/2F. The official map, however, for the 2G Europe beam is very similar to the Astra 1 fleet. Comparing the results of scans in the same band with my 1M dish it is clear that 2G is 1.3 - 1.8dB lower than 1KR / 1L. This, of course, isn't an exact comparison as skew / LNB focus may be different between 28.2E and 19.2E

Ok, but surely they are going to have the data correct on their own transponder, right? This is data from DVB tables on 11223/11263H.

Yep. Only needs to be a fraction out of skew and that data transponder flattens the adjacent transponders.

Thanks for that both. Obviously been well aware of the data transponder 'effect' but that was the first time that it affected others on my settings.

Adjusted the LNB skew and 11024 and 11053 came back.

No Solly - it's only the satellite orbital position. Foot prints will remain the same.

I think you are mistaken. These freqs are on the UK 2F Beam.
