I thought the day had come just after a week ago when the family receiver finally stopped receiving commands frrom the remote (which was OK).
The receiver itself has been in operation under the same television for almost 15 years and predates HD, but is a linux based box with ethernet (not that I have used it) , twin tuner and integral hard drive, along with PCMCIA and card slot to boot.
Inside, the box of tricks is nicely ventilated (no fan required) and power supply separate from the rest of the gubbins.
A quick hoover and check on all the leads confirmed there were no dry joints, the fix turned out to be reversing the strip lead to the front panel, probably removing a decade+ of corrosion and dust in the process.
All back up and running after reassembly (I also dismantled the remote to clean up sweat on the carbon points and remove debris under the buttons) and all is good. I doubt I could find another if I tried.
The ElanVision does have quirks, and connects to the screen with a SCART lead, but is the only receiver I have had where all the family can use it without complaining/swearing, so I get another ten years of peace for little more than an hour of my time.
It runs USALS (up to 47 degrees, never did find out why it won't catch beyond that) and locks up on a few Hotbird frequencies when I scan for new channels, but to date it hasn't done anything that I could put down to a manufacturing defect.
There are also some 60 hours of content on the hard drive, dating back to 2010 that I can relive in my own time.
