Ban 4 x 4's for road use

Whenever I park on a public car park I always try to make sure I park in the middle of the lines despite having what is considered a small hatchback. Why is it that gas guzzling 4 x 4 owners think that they can park willy nilly with their extra wide vehicles too close to other people, at an angle, swing their wide doors open, dinking the bodywork of the car next to them without so much as a sorry note left under the wipers. My vehicle has had a number of such dents which are not worth paying the insurance excess on to get repaired and it now has another one after today. Are these plebs complete moronic idiots? have they no consideration for other road users? Based upon my experience of their tailgating, middle lane hogging practices I strongly suspect not.

We learnt from our family and friends in Italy not to worry about scratches, small dents etc. - they are "de rigeur" over there.

I used to be a typical English owner who lavished more attention on my shiny, pristine car and actually now I really don't worry at all. Quite happy to run vehicles to their bitter mechanical end regardless of how they look.

But I do agree about 4*4s as they are common out here in t'sticks ("We really, really need one, Gerald - if only to look down on the bloody little poor people") and they have no comprehension of basic physics especially Newton's Laws of Motion, Momentum etc. and also appear not to be equipped with either Brakes or Trafficators (I'm old ............).

Just like a French car park then, but it's not just 4X4's......though the UK 4X4 owners here (both resident and visitor) are exactly the same

It ain't always 4x4 owners who dent your car in the car park, it's often the small two door car owners, I've sat in the van and watched them get out and let the door swing, whether it be oldies or youngsters, just no thought for others.

Thing is, you can't say "ban all 4x4s because they're a menace", because there's a lot of 4x4 small cars that are in no way the same category as a road-hogging Range Rooney...

Personally, I'd make everyone work for their driving licences by taking a re-test every 2 years, fail and you go back to driving school, pass and you can drive on, because people get too complacent when they've been driving for a long time and getting away with many misdemeanors, and then while yakking away on their mobile phone they run someone over because they were over-confident...

Dents in car doors are one thing, dents in human skulls are another...

I would certainly like to see an automatic re-test required for any moving motoring offense at least a minimum of the theory part as by committing the offense they have demonstrated either a lack of knowledge or disregard of the laws. This would entail surrender of their license and in less serious cases replacement with a temporary 3 month license until the test is passed.

Put anyone wishing to take their car test on a motorbike for a month.

Darwinian standards will weed out the ones that are likely to ignore other vehicles once the L plates have been discarded.

If you ask me large 4 x 4 vehicles should be re-catorgorised on the driving licence and should require a different test to be made for the right to use them on the public highway in much the same way as you now need to to drive a 7.5 tonne truck.

That should put off the road about 95% of 4 x 4 users

They should have special parking places made for them charged at twice as much as a normal vehicle and they should be banned from normal vehicle spaces, the insurance should be twice as much and so should the road tax.

The only exceptions to this should be if you are a farmer or if you require an off road vehicle for your job. 4 x 4s aren't the problem its the mindless toff idiots that own the Chelsea tractors that are the problem.

Well, if you think about it, it would weed out the people who do not know how to drive, and the average driving tests (Theory and Practical) these days are at most a few hours for one day, so a day off once every two years for a few hours of showing whether you're a safe driver or not is better than someone driving their chelsea tractor over a kid at a pedestrian crossing because they're more interested in who facebooked something funny on their profile than paying attention to the road...

It's like guns, you get people who have a gun licence, but they go and kill someone, then all the blame is put on the guns because they apparently kill people all by themselves, never the person who actually pulls the trigger, and it's the same with cars, blame is put on the type of car, not the driver who holds said licence to own said car, and it's the person who owns the car who is the problem...

There are many thousands of people who are perfectly responsible with FourBys, who don't hog the road, who use it to transport more than their prized chihuahua and mobile phone, and that actually do go offroad, you know, actually using the car for it's intended purpose (unless it's a BMW X5 which is useless on both off and on road use), like with anything, it's the few who spoil it for the majority, and like a green blooded person once said, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, retaking a driving test every two years to me would help the majority get rid of the minority, or at least make them see the errors of their ways...
