Basic Kit for FTA Spanish and Italian Channels

My wife wants to signup for Sky which I'm reluctant to do as I don't feel the cost will justify the channels we will actually watch on it.

However she would like some Italian channels and I would like some Spanish channels (neither of which are available on Sky as far as I know).

So, I've sold her the idea of a DIY satellite job to get some FTA channels and would like to know if I'm likely to succeed.

As a first kit I want to buy the following (will upgrade later if this experiment succeeds):

My location:
Margate, Kent

If I can get install this kit successfully and receive the following:

  • 2-3 Spanish language channels
  • 2-3 Italian language channels
  • A few FTA English language channels
Is this likely based on my location with the kit I have listed above from Maplin?

Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

Welcome to the forum sr83.

For free to air Spanish & Italian programming, I would recommend an 80cm dish with 6 deg monobloc LNb coupled with a standard receiver. Set up for Astra1 and Hotbird, the above system should meet your requirements.

There are a few English language channels available also.
 
It might actually be better to go for a three LNB set up for Astra 1, Hotbird and Astra 2 as that way you also get the free UK/English-language channels which are found on £ky. {Unless I'm mistaken and OP already has the free £ky channels?}
 
Hi,
a single 60 to 80cm dish would be fine for Astra 19E and Hotbird. But there's hardly any English on there, so you'd probably want to receive from 28E as well.

There are various options for picking up all three sats, but a monoblock is best avoided in this instance.

Unless you want to get a motorised dish, the two options I'd consider would be a 60cm dish for hotbird/astra1 and a second smaller one for 28E, with a Diseqc switch fed to your receiver.
The other option would be a 80 to 90cm dish with 3 LNBs, one for each satellite.

For viewing in just one room, the motorised dish is the best, as you could also get 9E and Hispasat 30W as well.



If you did want to keep it really basic, with just one satellite, you'd either get lots of Italian and just 1 or 2 Spanish from Hotbird, or vice versa from 19E. Neither having much English at all.

I have been around and I am still a little bit confused, with all the recent news of encryption for programmas or channels,

Well this is my situation: I've got 2 Tvs, one can't access to any connection. the other one is connected to a small dish thorugh a freesat humax box HD the small one and for the moment I have the UK channels. But obviously what I would like is to have both italian and english channels.

As the Council is installing a Dish for all the block with the new tech digital connection (which I dont understand very well) I was thinking to use this connection for the English Channels with my freesat box when this is available. but now to buy a big dish (they said about 1 mtr) to get orientated to the hotbird for italian channels and to install to the main TV and to the other TV.

Well, in my logic I will need 3 boxes, one for the english channels , another for the italian channels both for the main TV and the other one for italian channels for the other TV.

As you see I am really confused about this issues of channels encryption as I would like to see a lot of the italian channels and now the football. is this possible?

Would you guys be kind to advise me about what kind of dish should I get, how many LNB? how many boxes and what kind?

I have seen an offer but it's says freview italian box together with the dish... would this be a another option? (something in my mind is telling me that Tv sat should be)

I setup my dish on Astra 28 for the English channels. I have since bought a 2nd dish, a 6deg monoblock for Hotbird and Astra and a 4-port disecq switch.

Yes or an uncommitted switch if your receiver supports them.
