BBC ITV etc phasing out SD services on satellite in 2023

A new LNB isn't a miracle worker but the best can be good enough to get over the line so that the minimum C/N ratio can be crossed and/or the rain fade margin is that little bit better. In my experience in working with different Ku Band LNBs recently, I've found the Golden Media GM201 & GM202+ (note - not the ordinary GM202, although it's a decent performer for stronger sats) to work well in many cases, sometimes beating the famed Inverto Black Ultra (the classic version that's hard to find brand new now) by over 1.5db particularly on the lower FSS Band frequencies that the BBC/ITV channels occupy at 28E. I can't vouch how good they can work for 28E in weak signal areas, but getting your hands on one can be worth looking at - main disadvantage is that unlike the IBU & the Technomate TM-1 Ultra (also a decent all-rounder) the neck on both Golden Media's aren't terribly long but this may or may not be of concern.

Sky confirms wider switch-off of SD channels coming in 2024 - Clean Feed

Sky has confirmed plans of a wider closedown of SD channels next year, in addition to making technical changes to the satellite broadcast signals that will cause older Sky SD boxes to lose channels.

Id say its a certainty the Cinema & Sports SD channels will close this year seeing as the HD versions are already the default & have been for a couple of years....

I've seen this now and it does look terrible. If you watch the repeats of the early series of 'new' Top Gear (circa 2003) currently being shown on Dave in the afternoon it suffers from the same blurry video quality. It looks like 576 50i has been butchered into 25p by line doubling each field and then blending odd and even fields into one frame.

It's certainly not how they were originally broadcast and I presume a product of someone at the BBC who didn't know, or care about, what they were doing when converting old tapes or DVDs into 'digital' format for long term storage or use by streaming services.

My biggest surprise is the 5 most-watched films were on ITV,ie sausaged by ads every 10 minutes? and long films !
. So,the endurance to ads baffles me really!
Now,is this still the case today,when netflix etc... are so cheap?
Here ,ads-in-films are still limited to 2,first break to check reviews online,2nd ,loo visit... endurable if the film is good.... But 6 breaks in a film?? we d never reach the end!
Why dont channels increase the price of ads ,so you 'd have them only once or twice...in a film ,I wonder!

Transitioned to Freeview HD box over a year ago in anticipation of SD removal though have a Sky HD Digibox available too for receiving in the fringe. Receiving good BBC1, 2, 3 and 4 HD but BBC News HD now becoming problematic and ITV1 HD (and sometimes 2, 3 and 4) available only parts of the day and seems to vary. Not sure if this is related to daily cycles in satellite positioning as it currently affects specific transponders? Possibly need local guidance on fine tuning LNB skew and axial displacement, have a GTMedia V8 Finder 2 which is DVB-S/S2/S2-X capable. Not available via PM yet but hope I can establish contact with Nalleman, who I believe may be in close geo-proximity, to discuss? mvh, Chrisradio4

All tv watchers are not the same ! some tolerate adds, some hate them, some just accept them and dont have feelings on the subject.
The quality of the picture dosent bother me within reason, i can also watch a old black and white film without problems loosing myself in the film not even thinking about the picture quality. pay tv is a must for some, wether it is cheap or not is personal opinion or income related. Having add breaks allows the tv channels to fund themselves providing free tv to those that want it.

I meant cheap,as 13 euros(netflix ad free) is what you spend for 2 at a cinema.For ONE show only.
Ads could easily be limited by selling air space at higher rates...
seeing 5times same stupid ad makes me avoid he product when I run into it.... not buy it.
The perfume ads,usually nicely made,with good music,come in December & vanish thereafter.
So,no time for us to hate them.
Ad makers should consider this.
