Thanks, was thinking of trying it with my 2.8 celeron and 1gig of Ram, may be on the weak side though. :)

That's certainly a stunning picture isn't it? :D

I take it that the codec is simulating the S2 decoding in software?!?!

Now that's really confusing! I didn't think that was realistic. No wonder it needs a stonking PC spec!

The minimum hardware specs are listed here:

Ah, so that would run on my 2.8Gig machine then, as my video card is also 256Meg and I have 1Gig of RAM. :) I might just give it a try. :)

Tell you what, I'm going to move this thread down into the high definition section, as it is very useful. :)

Might not work 1.0.0.0 is the newest version that I bought Saturday.

Then it wont work without the edited purchased DVBViewer thats been designed around Coreavc.

No its only decoding DVB-S using H264 which BBC has said it will be using for the first part of the tests.

Sadly DVB-S2 is hardware

Ive got an email today from the beeb to, im shocked their reception advisors actually know what we are on about!.

This is for all the DVB-S sat-card users on satellites.co.uk

My original message

Hi, I have a Skystar2 PCI Card that is able to view DVB-S and H264 ive
read online that the BBC HD tests will begin with DVB-S and H264 then
move over to DVB-S2 is this true, if so ill be very happy.

Cheers.

The reply

Thank you for your email.

The HDTV experiment on satellite will start off with the DVB-S standard
and
move to the S2 version, so a receiver needs to support both.

H.264 is the video standard from MPEG-4 (also called part 10), and yes
we
will be using it.

Dolby AC3 audio support is also needed.

Do note, I've not been able to check these aspects of the card's
performance as like a lot of software controlled devices, a complete
specification does not appear to exist in one place.

I hope this is of help.

Ive emailed them back giving them information on what software im using to decode the H.264 tests with AC3 from other broadcasters.

Hi

As much as I can understand, the BBC HDTV experiment will last one year, and they'll start in May with DVB-S1, moving later (at some unspecified date) to DVB-S2.

Do you have any clue whether this change will happen before or after the World Cup ?

I live in Portugal, and presently I don't have any dish pointed to Astra2.

But since I already have an SS2 card and a Sanyo Z2 projector, it would take only a small investment (and a lot of courage to steal my youngest kid's superfast PC) in order to see the World Cup in HDTV format.

But if BBC changes to DVB-S2 before the Wold Cup, I (we) will be DOOMED.

So what do you think ? Should I take the risk and put right now a new dish pointing Astra2 ?

Since most of you are from UK, I think (and hope) that you are in a better position to give me some advice/clue regarding this issue.

There has been alot of inquries about what type they will be using so Im sure they have taken note DVB-S is popular and really would be sensible to use this during the world cup to make the most of current technology that isnt to expensive to the average joe.

Im sure that DVB-S2 recivers are backwards compaitable whatever the codec thats beening used by the broadcaster, so they dont have to worry about quickly changing to S2 for the SKY HD Boxes.

You really need a super fast computer indeed, and right mixture of codecs and software.

Its gonna be on Astra 2D so maybe posting a question in the Astra 2 fringe reception area be a good idea to.

Good luck Ive been enjoying the very little content thats out there in this mixture of DVB-S but its great :D

Well, reading the specs for all the S2 chipsets I've seen so far state that they also include S1 capability (and let's face it, they'd be stupid not to) but it's not part of the S2 standard AFAIK, so buyer beware!

Uumm, there appears to be two threads on the same subject. I will answer here.

Having read numerous posts, its quite clear STICK that you know your mustard:D What gets me though is that every other poster proposes a new viewer and that even the usual names in this field; i.e., Hauppauge (sorry if they are seen as lame) haven't got any kit to satisfy/pacify the s2 user?

It seems like a big mess.

Something definitive on this in the HDTV section (as a sticky say) might help.

The only thing that I can gather is that S1 chipsets do just that - S2 chipsets are backwards compatible AFAIK, but I have seen little kit out there. Yippee, that helps. What's next?

Have Fun,

BarMoo.

P.S. Stick your Avatar has taken a hike?

LOL, yes, my avatar is shafted :(

You're right, it seems a bit of a mess, but S2 chipset production hasn't really started rolling yet. Major players only announced finalised specifications at the beginning of the year. I imagine that newer chipsets won't include DVB-S decoding forever, as there won't be any S1 transmissions to decode!

As a footnote to all the talk of high powered computers to run HD on the Skystar2 with fancy codecs etc, I just bagged this screenshot on my lowly Athlon XP2500 (1.83GHz) with ProgDVB right out of the box and only the standard Elecard decoders.

If you switch all the other crap off on your PC, it rocks. £40 well spent.

NO! I beg you not to reply, LOL - I have just come back from the pub.

Interesting all the same, or, am I outta the loop on this?

Mark, sorry new name BarMoo.

Yes its quite easy to do regular MPEG2 decoding with the Elecard decoders.

All this thread is, is about MPEG4 / H.264 :D

Hi remlap

Thanks for your reply.

I also think that they will only change to S2 after the World Cup, because it's logic. But, sometimes, logic can be very treacherous :D .

I've just started to convince my son, and it's only a matter of a few days to install the new dish.

I think I'm going to try Coreavc. Can we use it with Progdvb, or is it better to try another viewer ?

I think the BBC will stay with DVB-S for awhile even after the world cup.

Good luck, I suggest buying a full version of DVBViewer

Then installing http://www.dvbviewer.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9206

I cant get it to work in progdvb whatever I try

Good luck with Astra 2D reception there!

What makes us so sure that BBC will transmit HD from 2D ?

I thought that the new tp that has been fired up in 2A will do this work !
