History repeats. The BBC have tried these horrid logo things with every digital channel - resulting in some modicum of rejection of the BBC4 logo when some art comes on.
Hey BarMoo, I am not sure its an issue with a free sat trial, at least it identifies the channel?

I agree with the we are paying for it with our TV tax, sorry, license, and that it should be logo free. uing this metric though, you could argue that its all completly unfair, as basically the BBC have started a trial that only a tiny percentage of the population can revieve.

I mean, using "Granny Logic", how long before my grandma can watch HDTV? Many years minimum! Yet she and many others are still paying to fund this. The logo on the channel I would say is the very small tip of a very large ethical iceberg!

My $0.02 is that the money that the government will make from selling the old analogue freq's off should be invested NOW in free to air HDTV. (off course we all know that, like the roads, money generated in one area is usually diverted to a higher priority cause, like funding Prescott's love-pads...)

I can see an argument for freeview BBC channels, £30 down the suprtmarket is not a steep buy in price to have to pay extra to watch what your license is already charging you for, but what is th buying price for HDTV? £300 for a Mpeg4 receiver, or £1K+ for the TV as well, its not quite the same and I am not sure the BBC will "sneak" this in!

At least they are pushing forward with the technology anyway.

I wish someone would release a cheap DVB-S2 PCi card though ;)

I am tempted to get a solution to watch the worldcup on HDTV, but I would lean towards a receiver with HDMI for watching on my 32" LCD.. and I am not conviced that anything bought now would be out of date next month/week/tomorrow....

Paul.

@ OldBen, I think you raised some good points there:-doh2

While some are frantically getting legacy PCI kit to work - I read yesterday that Comet are selling one flat panel every 15 seconds. (no news on whether they are 4:3 or 16:9, ananlogue or HDMI).

Albeit, I wouldn't be suprised if some retailers are flogging them as ''World Cup in HD ready.'' True if you have SKY or Cable.

Remlap can you please post more detailed info about getting BBC HD working with dvbviewer.
I have purchased the pro version and have powerdvd 7 installed but the H264 codec does not appear in the codec list within dvbviewer.
Are you using the "H264 kit" which is downloadable from dvbviewer site?

Is the BBC HD broadcast in DVB-S MPEG-2 or DVB-S2?

My SS1 can't decode mpeg-4.

Yes it can, sort of. You can't use the TV out [onboard MPEG2 decoder] but if you run it in "SoftMode" you can use the same software H.264 decoders as everyone else. There are some threads on the DVBN about how to set it up.

Cheers,
Nick

Are you sure of that? I'm talking about the SS1 not the SS2. Can you confirm that i can open an HDTV mpeg-4 dvb-S channel with my SS1?

As far as I know, the SS1 in software mode is pretty much identical in operation to the SS2.

Not being picky, this is just in the hope that it may help one or two out there...

Lancelot has apparently been trying the Skyview/PowerDVD7 Deluxe approach on his older (hardware decoding) SS1 in 'SS2 software emulation mode' and it don't work, whereas the real SS2 does.

A small point maybe, but it proves that they're not quite the same somehow...?

SkyView only works with the SkyStar2 because it uses the streamreader.dll lib [part of the B2C2 / FLEXCORP SDK] to access the card. It can send full 188 byte transport stream packets to the software. Although the SkyStar1 / TT-Premium / Nexus uses the same Philips SAA7146A PCI controller as the SkyStar3 / TT-budget / Nova [which can also send full 188 byte packets] the SKyStar1 also has a Texas Instruments TMX320AV7111 DSP which rather unhelpfully strips out the transport stream headers leaving 184 byte packets. The firmware hacks can not prevent this happening.

So now you know... :D

LOL, no, too many other things in the queue before that. :)

It is of interest though, because I was planning to put either my SS1 or SS2 into a spare PC and this decided for me as to which one. :)

I've got a SS2 for my laptop, but it's USB1.0 (useless for HD!)

Are there any USB2 cards that will enable me to watch HD? I want to clone the screen to a projector...
Cheers

Cheers m8y, as always.

Is it not possible to just add the missing four bytes back in with a felt-tip?!?! :-doh!

Hi Peter,

On the last part of your Q - here's my experience with cloning.

I have DVB-T USB stick. I wanted to clone the player output to a normal TV (via the COMP out) - didn't work. While the desktop appeared on the TV, the active player frame was dead. PC was fine.

Maybe a projector with a computer (DVI) input working as the main monitor ??? (Ala, a suit giving a PowerPoint presentation, hehe). Not very flexible though, DVI cable prices and fixed lengths.

Hope that helps.
