Beginner Help (please!)

Hi guys,
Sorry I'm new to all this and have a few newbie-ish questions.
I have a Satcatcher Voyager II system that apparently has an integrated ( see here:_http://www.satcatcher.co.uk/receivers). Anyway, I can't find a USB port or ethernet connection anywhere on the box to link it to my PC.

If somebody could direct me towards a basic how-to guide for descrambling somewhere it would be greatly appreciated.

I've used the search function looking for specifics to my set-up but it hasn't returned anything that I've found useful.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, and if so I'm sorry - as I said, new to this particular domain. :)

It has an RS-232 interface.
I suppose that you would need a null modem cable to use in order to connect it to your PC (serial interface also).
Search the internet to see if there are softwares to help you with what you have in mind.
Please remember that using the wrong software could damage your box so unless you are 100% sure about what you are doing, then change at your own risk.

Google has returned me a whole range of information which didn't seem at all relevant to what I wanted to do, but now you've highlighted something I guess I'll go with that.

Hi,
If that receiver is patchable, there are indications that it might be. ( just do a forum search). Then you should be able to get a patch if you google for it.

I've found a patch that says it will convert it to an OpenBox x800.
Does that sound about right?

I'm primarily interested in sorting out the Irish channels (RTE1, RTE2, TG4) and retaining and possibly gaining French, Italian and Polish channels.

The Irish Channels, are they on the Sky platform?

There is no chance of getting those with a patch,NDS Videoguard is secure.
 
Yeah, I just did a bit of reading and it seems a little impossible.

I originally thought it was only RTE channels that were encrypted and that there may have been a chance of getting T3 or TG4.

I'm surprised no one's figured a way around the encryption though.

I don't have a Sky subscription, just my dish, receiver and PC.

Ok, well at present without having tweaked anything, I have about 20% of the channels available. I'm picking up several satellites with my dish, just most of the channels are scrambled.

Do you reckon I'd have more luck with the Italian, French and Polish channels?

I have some of each, but 90% are useless apart from the national Italian TV channels which are thankfully available.

I know nothing about your receiver at all.

But on other systems, the answer is YES, for French,Polish and German and a few others besides, at the moment.
 
Thank you for your help thus far.

There is an update on the manufacturer's website which is a year out of date, so I don't really want to touch my box with that, and then there is that Openbox x800 patch.

I know everything's cloak and dagger, but surely somebody must have used Openbox before and can say whether or not it's any good!

I think you might be better off going to the a l s a t forum for this type of information as that is their main area of expertise.;) I am sure you would find what you are looking for.
 
Be aware that flashing your receiver may kill it if the flash goes wrong. Its a remote chance but you should be aware of the possibility esppecially if you are using firmware to convert it to something else. TRIPLE check you have the right one before starting..
