Trying to be a good neighbour and after no serious objections to me getting a big dish for C band I was then thinking of all the bits required. Now I spent ages wandering around for the best position and fobbing off many "why don't you put it there" remarks I was making progress. That is until one neighbour thought 2.4 metre would be any eyesore but maybe happier if painted green. The other neighbour wants me to wait as her house will be up for sale shortly and no new buyer wants to see such an eyesore. The council have no objections within limits! but believe I should think of my neighbours and consider something smaller.
 
Neighbours can be a pain. Before I even thought about applying for the permission, I walked around the two of my neighbours that would see the dish and explained the situation in a nice and friendly way. Certainly painting it green goes a longer way than you think. Same for planning application. Take pictures of everything; where the dish will be and from where it will be seen. Although mine is at the end of the garden, it's fairly discreet as far as it being seen from the roads.

Only one of my neighbours really had some concerns but nothing a good chat didn't sort out. I think I was lucky - you can get some right old moaners...
 
One neighbour is OK, the other will move but how soon? Maybe I could go for a 1.8, depends how much less I will get.
 
.. as part of my battle for my large dish installs at my property many years ago i actually drafted up a document that described what i was doing and went around all the immediate neighbors for them to sign to say they had no objections. This was also used as part of the application for the local Council high almighty gods. I initially went around the neighbors firstly on a one to one chat and that i would be calling later with the document to sign. I was very lucky also with the people that surrounded me. Good luck with it.
 
All my dishes are painted (non-metallic car spray paint) in a random zigzag pattern - very effective at making them blend in with the surroundings.

Those down the garden are painted in green (a Vauxhall colour IIRC) and brown (red oxide primer) in a zigzag pattern to blend in with the small trees and wooden fences around them, and the one on the conservatory is painted in an off-white shade to blend in with the rendering on the house walls - both approaches seem very effective at "disguising" the dishes. No complaints after 2-3 years, especially given that we are surrounded by houses on all sides - albeit that the TD110 is the largest at only just over 1m tall.

Maybe paint an existing spare dish with the pattern you propose to use on the larger dish, and take a few pics of that to show the neighbours you want to get on your side?

Get planning and sod the neighbours, I wouldn't have even brought it to their attention.
A big dish is a thing of beauty, if they want to play the "eyesore" card them I'm sure they have far worse things you can consider an "eyesore" and I don't mean their spouse.
 
One of the neighbours at my previous place liked to sunbathe topless in her "partially enclosed" garden. Thankfully she was young and relatively attractive so I didn't mind!

My stepson previously lived on the 2nd floor of a block of flats that has a similar building across the road - and, in one of the flats in that block, he said that there was (probably still is) a "lady" of "not so tender years" who persistently swanned around and lay on the carpet absolutely starkers, and with the curtains wide open! :-wow

Never saw it myself, but I believe what he said as it seems to have gone on for years.:rolleyes:

Obviously different your way because here if you apply for planning the council mail all surrounding neighbours so they are able to comment or object if they wish. While I do get the f*** em argument for what you want to do in your back garden I have found keeping the neighbours on side makes for a much easier life.
 
Yep.

You got to live amongst them, so better to do so peaceably.

Up here, we do actually know each other and, after ten years residence, one is accepted sufficiently enough to be able to exchange pleasantries.
 
I have no neighbours to my rear, maybe that's why I don't care about them lol.

Ref the local council informing neighbours of a property for which an application for planning permission has made, they do the same here - but only the immediate, next door, ones.

That said, as I mentioned earlier, our garden is overlooked from pretty every direction by other houses, which is why my dishes are camo-painted and "discretely" located at low level between my garage and next-door's garage & high fence. That's results in the arc being limited to 53E to around 40-45W - and, of course, no feasible opportunity to install any very large dish without a potential "real hassle" about that and the existing ones!

Therefore anyone wanting to install a "big" dish would do well to work out the potential legal and neighbourhood "obstacles"!

We have limited space in the local cemetery and the French are slowly being persuaded that cremation is better....
 
Are there any transparent dishes these days? 2.4m is relatively huge for the UK.
Good luck with getting a permission
There is a good chance that the lady who wants to sell her house might sell it to a new owner who would object to your big dish.
