With that force winds you should ensure that the dish is firmly secured by additional nuts or lock nuts to the frame of the dish itself.From experience one intends to overlook that fact and there is a tendency for the dish itself, to work loose from its frame, if not securely mounted.I am in Africa and turn my polar mount side on to break the force of the wind.You did state that with a pending storm to remove your dish or to turn it,that is good thinking.
Big Dish blown over in storms - Canaries

Well managed to keep to schedule (doing 10 and 12 hour days). Dish is now back up. Was feeling very smug today as I got a good signal on BBC ITV CH4 and reasonable signal on Eurobird S1 (True Movies etc), but the smug look has come off my face as tonight BBC etc breaking up badly, so will be re aligning tomorrow - I will get all the channels on my dish. I have a few ideas; you know what they say about necessity!
Have some pics below.
First pic, shows dish put up before concrete poured to test my calculations. As you can see they were correct and I got the dish very close to side wall. Second shows how much concrete went in. Pic three (sorry out of order) shows dish test. Dish only held by resin fixed bolts with a slight breeze blowing. That resin is strong. Pic four, the final product. Looks good for a five year old dish thats been through two bad storms (after a good clean and polish).
So back in action - well will be after I have re aligned and re run cables properly!

I always believe in safety first. As you can see from post 37 with rsj in, mass off concrete supported on four walls. I don´t want any more sleepless nights when winds get up. If dish gets blown over after all this work it can stay down.
Gutted spent hours tonight realigning dish only to find problem is with multiswitches (so my original alignment for 2D and Eurobird might have been ok, though I am getting 25% more strenght and quality on 2D by having 2D as the prime focus of dish).

Great photos. The photo of the warped dish shows how strong the wind was. It looks like a 'Lidl special' so perhaps there should be no surprise that it capitulated to the wind. The RSJ looks good and strong. It can be harder to remove them than put them in, this one looks the same.
I always take a direct line to the receiver when setting up anything, preferably with the receiver and tv beside me. Otherwise you can get caught out by all sorts of things - kinked, broken and loose cables being the most common. It is a real pain when you have to troubleshoot everything.

As you can see this person has not been lucky and dish is a write off. Dish was only bolted in, no concrete base. Surprised this dish went, as this one is in a valley and wind was blowing across valley not up it.

They look like Famaval dishes with the extension petals. Famaval are based in Portugal. The wind may have veered in a sudden huge gust and hit this one head on. It could be repaired somewhat with a rubber mallet. Just gently beat it out. I doubt it would be good enough to get Astra 1d as well as before, but it still would be usable. If you want a new dish for the strong satellites you might get lucky and get a smaller bent one that is being thrown away. I doubt they would give this big one away, someone with a stetson and 4lb hammer will probably come round some day on his knackered old horse and 'fix it'. O-no
Playing 'I Spy...' I can see at least 8 other dishes other than the 2 big ones in the first picture, and 3 in the second picture including what looks like 2 Televes dishes (pity they aren't orange). More fun than spot the ball?

Famaval is not a rigid dish specially when it has the extension petals bolted on..
We had some photos posted here in the past of damaged Famavals in worse condition (notice the dish+concrete base in first photo traveled from one end of the roof to the other)

Must have been a strong wind to move it on the base. Big dishes are like sails in the wind. Every owner of a big dish must be familiar with that clanking noise which echoes all night and makes you wonder where it will end up. Mine certainly had me worrying at night (no space to put it up here, sadly).
There was a photo posted recently of a similar dish which flew off a roof onto a roof opposite, sitting on the tiles with one side bent. Nightmare. I think the neighbour was lucky that their roof was in one piece, not to mention anyone walking by in the street.

Spotted another blown over dish today. Again looks like a Famaval dish. This one had a small concrete base about 1 or 1.5 foot square. That was ripped up.
Looks like this owner might be lucky, I couldn´t see any damage from where I was standing.
And for hexah, I have included more of the roof of one of our local dish farms so you can play spot the dish. We do have a few orange Televes here. Some nice ones just out of town about 2 meter prime focus.
We certainly have alot of dishes here. And a large number of big ones.

It is ridiculous that they get away with such dodgy installations. I could see it sliding off the roof and causing all sorts of damage.

Well I can count 36 dishes in that picture.
I think that makes me some kind of a trainspotter in the satellite world.

Mind you I don´t always understand people. I did a favour for a friend who has a bar with a big dish shared with other bars (trying to improve reception). I told him that dish was dangerous as it was a 2.4m offset dish in an exposed position just bolted to the roof. I got a builder to quote for a large concrete base to cover the stand. Think it was about 300 euro (- between 4 - naff all each). Other bars were not interested so nothing happened. A few weeks later we had a storm and the dish blew over. Fortunately dish stayed on the roof and was undamaged. So what did the bar owners do? Just got someone to bolt back up!!!!!!!!!! You would think being warned by someone might have made them think, but the dish actually blowing over you would think they would act, especially with the potential liability. Oh well.

Wow DishDick and I was worried about my 80cm dish during the storms.Not sure where you are based but I am on the fringe of Maspalomas and the property is in a complex fairly exposed to the elements.Thats a fine dish you have and what a joy to be able to receive viewable English language channels.Afraid I'm stuck with either 16 or 19 degrees.I hear you on those stupid bar owners.Charge top prices for their beer but wouldn't pay for a decent installation.I'm sure you can hear my envy of your setup and fingers crossed that you are back up and running.Maybe you could record some decent TV and beam it to me (only joking........) or am I.

I like my system. Only just finished tidying up the cables and repairing and painting the roof today (well thursday). I would advise you getting another dish for Nilesat. Great telly from a small dish where you are.

totaly agree with you..i had to clean many jobs lately because of does so called monkeys and the customer ended up paying double...shame i didnt have my camera with me in some cases .to show you ..a real satellite murder..LOL....cheers

You can actually get quite a lot with an 80 cm dish and a SKY HD receiver provided you get a viewing card. ITV1 (& HD), C4 HD, FIVE (& HD), Fiver, Five USA. Even with a regular Sky box you only lose C4 completely. Plus quite a few other free channels. If you have a Sky subscription then you will get quite a high %ge of the Sky package with an 80cm dish.petediscrete said:
