Hi does anyone have a clue how to recover a BIOS password. I bought the laptop second hand, when I went to change the operating system from Win 7 to Linux I found the BIOS was locked.

Usually you can clear a password by removing the backup battery inside of the laptop, but this isn't a guarantee as a lot of laptops these days have security chips that prevent this reset technique from working, and the only solution to that is replacing the chip itself with a clean one which is not as easy as it sounds (small SMD component stuff!)...

Best bet is to google your laptop model and "BIOS password reset", as it differs between brands as to what to do... :)

Get hold of the previous owner and request full bios access, or return & money back.
Alternative, sorry to say, unless some antiquated machine will be a new motherboard.

I am sure you have tried the 0000 as pw

Or indeed "password" as the password

It used to be easy, as all you had to do was to move the BIOS jumper plug, over from pins 1 + 2 to pins 2 + 3.
Can you please post the details of your motherboard, you'll find this information upon booting up, just press the pause key, so you can write down the information.
You might also have to press the escape key, if there's a splash screen, hiding the information.
Failing that please post full details, of the laptop, make, model, series number, etc..

Not sure on the motherboard as I am not at home at the minute. The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra R940
