Long time broadcaster and Sounds of the Sixties presenter Brain Matthew has died aged 88.

His career stretched back to the late forties and he joined the BBC in 1954. He was presenting popular music programmes before the start of the early sixties Merseybeat boom and his radio show Easy Beat hosted all the rising stars. He also hosted Thank Your Lucky Stars on ITV, again with virtually every major star of the period appearing.

He was presenting Sounds of the Sixties (after taking over from Keith Fordyce) right up until February this year but his departure was subject to controversy when the BBC announced in January that he would be leaving the show.

That's twice this week ...... Auntie announced his death a few days ago and got it wrong!

Quite. It's not the first time the BBC, Daily Telegraph etc have got it wrong.

The latter has, on several occasions, published Obituaries for the living.

Brand and Ross taking liberties leading to a few falling on their sword, yet they still found work with Auntie up to last week with Red nose day.


A faux-pas on someone's passing is hardly in the same league.
 
Fond memories of Saturday Club and Thank Your Lucky Stars in the days when pop music was strictly rationed. RIP, Brian.
 
There goes a wealth of knowledge and experience and an end to Saturday listening. I fortunately have recorded his last shows as broadcast and the compilation he did in February.
You will be missed Brian R.I.P.
