it will be 50p per month for every fixed line phone number that you have already got installed.

As the objective of this TAX is to get everyone who wants it, onto 2MB/sec broadband by 2012, when it is achieved, will the government of the day repeal this tax?
Will they heck, no matter who is 'in', we will carry on paying it for ever more along with any general taxation increases that they decide we can afford.

I can see an increase in the sale of wireless bridges and similar equipment coming ..

granted its only 50p a month atm ..
but if the gvt starts this kind of nonsense ...who knows where it will end.

Considering this is supposed to benefit us sheep-loving yokels the most, don't they think we are already being taxed enough for our 512k connections by virtue of having to pay the same as all those with 8Mservices?

And have been doing so for years!

I call that a subsidy of the townies and shirley it's payback time ???

the so called 8Mb services are often as low as 2 Gb so I don't think you are really missing out so try to be positive, just think of the lower amount of pollution entering your systems living in the country...

Hi, am new to these forums, so hello to everybody :)

For me, I have 2 phone lines into my house so does this mean I have to pay twice even though broadband is only on the 1 line?

I don't mind taxes if they are well thought out but the current gvt just seems to come out with ill thought out taxes, cars and green being a prime example.

I also liked the way that the Chancellor mentioned protecting the pensions of the civil service and then said he would be raising NI contributions, makes you wonder doesn't it?
