Channels?

Am finally grtting my head around this a bit.
It seems there are 2 types of receivers, ie the official freesat and all the other non-official.
Am I right in thinking that the un-official will do much the same, including 7 day programme list, if not more than the official and the main difference is the "interactive-red button"?
I am still looking at the Technomate TM-1350, so it appears that this will get all the "official" freesat stations, but will it get more?
On this forum there is a section called "New Channels", and it lists a lot more on 28e than Freesat list ( I think that this is my satallite). Will I be able to get these?
Also, how relevant is a card reader?

Most none Freesat receivers only do now & next on the epg.

The new channels we list all are noted if they are fta or are scrambled in NDS Videoguard. If they are listed as the latter you wont get them on any fta box.

Note - Freesat is a subset of the fta channels and by no means all of them are on the epg. On most Freesat boxes (NOT ALL) you can use a none Freesat mode to watch channels (albeit only with now & next.

So basically if I do a scan I will receive whatever extra programmes are available?
Also, the epg will work ok even I was told in Ireland taht only Freesat receivers work?

Yes to both, but if the broadcast doesn't deliver an EPG guide your receiver understands, it will come up either blank, or missing info.
