I need help as I am completly lost. I am the very least Technically Minded person though IT Literate
Can anyone pls let me know where I can find info for completly new beginners with regards to Dreambox. A book or website which will tell me what I have to do and the advantages. Most importanly do I have to be a Tech Genius to make full advantage of a Dreambox.

What do you want a book for?? This forum will give you all the info you require about Dreamboxes.

If you expect them to be a magic box that will give you all the pay tv channels immediately forget it - they dont work like that.

The most important thing to remember is that they are high end enthusiasts receivers. You dont take them out of the cardboard box and get the best out of them in the first 6 months - theres hundreds of hours of reading involved before you get to grips with the advanced functions.

If you want to take your new toy out of the box, plug it in and get full functionality then you should be buying a Sky subscription or a Freesat receiver :D
 
Well said my friend.

Guys spend at least a week reading. If there's things you're not sure about spend another week reading. Think about what you want from the box and if you intend buying a sub (highly recommended) then do the research to find out if the card is usable in the Dreambox. Most are, some are not.

Here's a very quick list to work through.
Learn about
1. Basic home Networking.
2. FTP.
3. Telnet.
4. What an 'image' is
5. What a 'Softcam' or 'Emulator' is.

When you know what all these are then buy a dreambox.
Now you can start to get it working. Allow your entire first week to even get something on the screen. If you want encrypted channels then allow another week.

Read and digest what you can, take it slow and when you think you understand one piece read it again. Lol. in all honesty it is a bit by bit process . If you are stuck on anything have a search on the forum, you can be sure that at least 10 others will have asked the same thing. And if you cannot find what you need then ask. Lots of very knowledgeable folks on this forum who can point you in the right direction.
 
Thank you. I do appreciate your comments and I accept it is going to take me some time, maybe months and that is why I was asking for guidance, especially as I am no Tech expert. I have to start from somewhere but if in the opinion of experts like yourself this is not going to be possible I will have to forget taking up this challenge.

Thank you Tomthebomb1968. I will download the Ultimate Idiot Guide and study it. Then I will decide whether I have the capablity and the knowledge to operate a dreambox. I must admit it is all rather mind blowing especially when I read some of the Technical stuff you experts discuss.

If you want a quick fix for free pay tv forget it - that annoys the members no end
