Hello,

Recently Cnbc Uk SD version got closed, it was on a European beam at 28E. Now there is just the HD version of CNBC Uk, which is on a UK spot beam. - 12168 V.

My questions are:
1. Who decides this frequency move - BSKYB/Freesat or SES Astra ? (or maybe Comcast/Time Warner- Cnbc's owner)
2. Is there a way to find out how long a channel will reside on a certain satellite frequency?

I know Cnbc Uk is basically the same as Cnbc Europe, but on weekends there is a certain difference, like Cnbc Europe carries The Tonight Show and Cnbc Uk Late Night. Some clients, that live outside the Uk spot beam, have asked if there is a LEGAL way to still get CNBC UK, via satellite.

Thank you.

Answers to questions...
1. Usually it is the broadcaster that is in contract to the transmission provider, though this is not always the case. There can be different reasons.
2. No, or at least not usually in the public domain.

As for the last bit - if you can use a large enough dish to receive the CNBC UK signal, then that is one option. Otherwise your only option might be to see if they offer streaming of the channel via their website.

Channels get moved around frequencies to balance the bandwidth requirements. Plus Ive seen it suggested capacity on the UK spots are cheaper than that on the European spots.

Your IP address puts you in Romania - there is little hope of getting the UK spot in Romania with any sensible sized dish.

Since CNBC and BSkyB are both owned by Comcast, it's likely it was a decision by Comcast.

CNBC is on Astra 19E,I think easy to catch from Romania.

The OP did ask specifically for the UK version for his clients, but the answer for that particular version is going to be no. They will have to make do with the European version. Or stream it

The old Astra 2D, was somewhat more forgiving with the footprint, and yes, indeed, there was some fringe reception, during the cold months, mostly in the evenings, with a clear sky and the dish alignment done to the millimeter. I remember locking BBC's top with my 1.8 m dish and feeling like my efforts were not in vain, after enduring a couple of hours in the cold, until i got my dish aligned. After the Astra 2D replacement, the signal footprint, in this region is low, certanlly not enough for tv viewing. And I don't have a 3m dish to check.

It's a shame with all the UK expats across Europe, can't get some of their favourite programs from home, VIA SAT. The Uk broadcasters should really copy the german model of broadcasting via satellite, having footprint all over Europe via 19.2E. Instead they encourage viewers to seek alternative methods.

I will try and contact Comcast, but I am not having any high hopes.
Thank you all for the help.

Its programming rights issues that stop the UK channels being transmitted on wide beams. If they were available to everyone the cost of purchasing programming would be considerably higher.

The German channels transmit in German so are of little interest outside the Germanic speaking countries. English is widely spoken across Europe.

So blame the Yanks for their restrictive pricing policies!
