Over short distances, below 10m, does the quality of coax used make much difference?

I have around 6m of unbranded, braided and shielded coax (plastic dielectric).

On my old system I had CT125.

Would it make much difference switching it out for WF100?

IMHO, assuming both cables were carefully and correctly installed, and with decent quality F-connectors, then I think the difference over 10m would be marginal at best - and possibly not even reliably measurable?

OTOH, "unbranded, braided and shielded coax (plastic dielectric)" might be slightly more lossy over a similar distance.

PS: Others may well disagree:-rofl2

I am being very vague on the length, it could be 4-5m.

It just seems a bit thin compared to decent coax Sky used on my minidish install.
 
If you have the cable already, why dont you try it ? if it causes a problem you will have to change for a better quality coax ( i dont think it will on such a short run)

I have been using it the last 12 months and it’s working fine.

Just wondered if there would be any benefit going to WF100/125

Almost certainly not if the current setup is "working fine" - although you MIGHT just see a VERY slight increase in SS/SQ in the Services Menu (assuming you are looking at SKY on a UK-spec "SKY BOX").

Frankly, it's not even worth the time & effort in making the change!:rolleyes:
 
Tomorrow, I`ll again upload that Satcure coax comparison chart and, THIS TIME, PLEASE CAN EVERY DOWNLOAD IT, so that I don`t have to do that every damnd week or so to answer the same damnd question AGAIN & AGAIN!!!

Just to confirm to avoid confusion, I have a motorised system and separate independent mini dish on 28.2e.

It is my motorised system that has the thinner / generic coax.

1) The Coax Comparison Chart that Satcure produced some time before they went out of business is attached as promised - obviously now ignore any implication that they could now provide such cable or terminated cables because they can't (although other suppliers probably could)!

NB: generic air-spaced coax is not included in the chart, but is likely to be slightly worse than it's foam-filled size-equivalent (and more prone to corrosion issues due t water getting into the air-spaces). OTOH, I and many others have it used perfectly successfully in non-critical installations such as UK Sky from Astra 2 where the signal strength is quite high.

PS: Even if you are just viewing this thread, PLEASE download the chart if you think you might ever need the info!

2) Note from that chart that the nominal attenuation figures are PER 100m, and thus roughly 1/10 that for 10m! Therefore the attenuation over 10 or less metres is only several dB or so - which is what one can easily get from poor connections, kinks, misaligned dishes, etc.

3) Therefore, now that you have clarified as to which setup you are asking for advice, and taking into account the values in that chart, do you think that it worth the effort to replace the coax that you are currently using, and if so then by which sort of cable?
(Personally, I doubt it)

I assume that with "this file" they mean "this (satcure) webpage".....

That is the problem with internet: all is so easy to copy and download, and to quote and republish, that upholding the copyright is very difficult.
I'm afraid I am not free of sin myself, sometimes, either.

@a33 (corrected - sorry!)

The website may still be there but Satcure, as a company, went out of active business a few years ago (and the MD - who shall not be named on our own website for "historical" reasons!) now lives on the island of Crete. Don't who/how if anyone maintains that site but one should not expect to get any specic help from it.

As for the chart, I downloaded and PDF'd that some years ago for my own reference purposes as I didn't know for how long the Satcure site would continue to exist. I pass it on as and when appropriate - but always with a full attribution to the original creators -, and, after all, the majority of the info in the chart was not proprietary to Satcure but was culled from various spec sheets published by cable suppliers.
 
I think with the cable length being 5/6m and it being double screened, I highly doubt I would see any difference at all!
