Combining technisat Multytenne and separate dish for 5W

Hi, I m trying to decide on adding to or replacing my existing two dishes. I want get 28.2E for UK FTA channels and now also 5W for Fransat (at the moment I have 19.2E for that).
I'm thinking of going for a Technisat Multytenne Twin so I can have four sats (28.2E, 23.5E, 19.2E, 13E) on one dish and then a separate dish for 5W. Is it possible to combine the feeds from these into one receiver? The Multytenne has a built-in Diseqc switch so I wonder if you can then have another switch? I have thought about a toroidal dish but I think it's too difficult for me to set up myself. Sorry if this a stupid question.

Hi among other things to consider, 5 west is due to get a new satellite this year and at least one of its beams is tight on France. This might affect signal strengths in some areas of the UK. I had my first French lesson 53 years ago so I have been interested in French a long time. I think thinking of 28 east for UK FTA and 19 east for TNTsat because I haven't heard of 19 east TNTsat getting a tighter beam. Plus I think the multi stream FTA stuff on 5 west may scramble when they tot up the figures of who is watching without access cards. I have a Humax 1000fr on 5 west at the moment works great. What it will receive when the new satellite is installed at 5 west remains to be seen. I also have a Strong TNTsat receiver at 19 east that needs a new card as its 4 years have run out. Dishes: I use a Gibertini 1 metre from 42 east to 30 west and a sky dish for 19 east. I have tried a 60cm dish for 5 west but it barely locks signal, most recommend 80 cm in the UK. I use 1 metre on 5 west locks solid. Hope my post has been of help. :)
 
Thanks, didn't know about the new 5W beam :( But it's not surprising, France has always stuck to protecting broadcasts for rights reasons. I've really had enough of TNTSAT receivers and will be going for FRANSAT definitely, I've already decided.

I am really suprised by what you are saying about receiving 5W, it was the first satellite I ever received on a 'camping dish', i.e. very small, and I get it much more easily than 28.2E. I didn't think I would need a 60cm +, unless something has changed since I first got it (about 10 years ago).

I note that you are in South West UK so I think you should be okay when / if the signal strength drops if they use the tighter beam. :)
 
I could still do with knowing whether I could combine this dish with another one into one receiver in any way if anyone knows...
 
You can run any number of LNB's, into one receiver, using a Diseqc switch, which come in various varieties, 4x, 8x, 16x, etc, providing your receiver can run Diseqc.
The problem is the technisat Multytenne, I've never used one, or heard of it, before, so I don't know how it will react with a satellite receiver, and what settings you have to use.
Do you need a dedicated Fransat receiver, and card, for 5W, or can the card run on other receivers, using an emulator, like Oscam?

Hi, a few years ago I used an Octagon 4 - 1 Diseq switch and this gave me 4 lnb's and they were switched by the Diseq settings in my receiver. Hope this helps.

The Multytenne has an inbuilt diseqc switch. The issue is combining it with another dish, maybe using another diseqc switch, which means there's two switches, something tells me that wouldn't work? If it can't be done, it's OK, I would just use two receivers.

For 5W you need either a Fransat receiver or card +CAM, or a multistream receiver. I heard you need a larger than average dish for the multistreams, though, so I won't be going for that as it's not possible in my situation. I was thinking of Fransat card and CAM. TNTSAT is awful.

Hi, could you explain what is awful regarding TNTsat? I ask because I am about to take the TNTsat route and you might save me a few bob. :)

OK, I might be exaggerating a bit. I can't tell you how it is now, because my TNTSAT receiver missed a vital firmware update and was rendered unusable, the only way I could get is to work again is to post it to the manufacturer for them to do the update- it's not worth it. At the time, my problems were now+next EPG only, and the hobbled receiver. At the time it was only possible to use their own receivers which were rubbish for other sats and couldn't export recordings, though there may be other 'solutions' now (I'm not clear on this). It's probably best to get a more recent opinion on it, though. Why were you going for TNTSAT, if you don't mind me asking?
 
Any suitable Diseqc switch will do, I used a very cheap one, when I was moving house, as I'd already packed my motorized dish, and it worked perfectly.

You might want to consider using separate LNB's, on an 80cm dish, for 28.2E, 23.5E, 19.2E and 13E, and a second dish for 5W, and a 8x Diseqc switch.
Or even two, or more, Diseqc switches, if using twin/quad LNB's, for multiple feeds, as you might want to view, and record, multiple channels, in the future, or send signals to other receivers, in other rooms.

What receiver missed the vital firmware update?
I have a Strong receiver that worked well for 4 years - card expired now. A new card mail order can be bought for around £30, but If I have missed a vital firmware update then my Strong receiver might be in the same boat as your receiver?

Up to 4 LNBs you can command with diseqc 1.0.

The multytenne has an inbuilt 4/1 diseqc 1.0 switch; combining it with one or more other LNB(s) requires a diseqc 1.1 switch, and your receiver should support diseqc 1.1.
If your receiver doesn't support diseqc 1.1 but still diseqc 1.2: there are switches that can be commanded by diseqc 1.2 (motor-) commands.

In these days with often weaker satellite signals (HD, MPEG4 etc) I would consider a multytenne too small, too few bad-weather-reserve. But the choice is yours.

It's a Sagem one. I didn't hear anything similar about other brands, but I suppose it's always worth checking.

Thanks, yes I know about the limitations of the Multytenne. I am in a listed building in a conservation area and have a lot of restrictions on what I can do. I could put a larger dish at the back of the house, but I'm not going to because the installation will be expensive and I might be moving soon, anyway. Also, there is an issue with where to secure a large dish, the house is so old that the stone crumbles and a large (or even medium) dish could pull stone away in strong winds. Everything's awkward. The installer said cables would have to go back over the top of the house because there are too many beams in the way if you come back through the house with it, etc. (I got a quote for it). He didn't seem keen on the job for some reason :)

Thanks for the information about the diseqc switches. Is there a recommended shop for buying those? Any recommendations on brand?

Not really. Spaun has them, EMP Centauri; also other brands.
I know of someone buying them cheap from China; but he always buys a spare one too.

A 2/1 diseqc 1.1 switch is pretty straightforward, I think; with a 4/1 or 8/1 or 10/1 switch you can must see if you want it to have a switch to chose the mode it operates on.
I personnally don't like the switches that switch on diseqc 1.2 AND diseqc 1.1 simultanuously (Axing has such a 8/1 switch). For simple setups they are 'versatile', for more complicated setups they might react to a command that is meant for another switch or for the motor......
