Saw the Commonwealth Games on the news. I had no idea it was coming to Glasgow next year. I looked it up on Wikipedia and LOL at the fact that there are fewer sports than usual. If you look at the list 2026 Commonwealth Games - Wikipedia then look at the list of sports usually held in a Commonwealth Games Commonwealth Games sports - Wikipedia then you should start to get suspicious. How much does it cost to put on an archery event? In the London Olympics they put it in a park. Same with beach volleyball. Road cycling is also easy, with a number of events every year in Scotland. There is a national shooting centre in Surrey with lots of accommodation near by. So why drop a lot of these events? Because the home nations will not do well in them is the reason! It is like putting a finger on the scales when weighing something.

If you think about it, it would be easy to have a full games by dividing the sports up and running them around the world every games. Then you would have a number of sponsors in each country because the local people would be directly involved in the games. My idea is to have 2 or 3 big countries and 3 to 4 small countries holding events during every future games from 2030. This would be broadcast around the world using satellite and fibre circuits. For the big countries like Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, UK with many sports facilities it would be easier than previous games because each big country would have 20% to 30% of the events. The smaller countries could use existing facilities. Some small countries have good facilities for some sports, Jamaica could host athletics, New Zealand has good rowing, cricket, rugby facilities and a velodrome for track cycling. Some sports only need indoor or outdoor arenas or public parks so the smaller island nations could easily host netball, badminton, squash, gymnastics, archery. Some events only need temporary road closures so road cycling, triathlon, race walking and the marathon could be held on tiny island nations. If the governing body made a profit, which is possible with ticket sales and big sponsors in so many countries, then it could be used to guarantee events in smaller countries and some could be spent improving the sports facilities in small countries. Like a Glastonbury festival for sport.

There is 12 months until the Glasgow games so there is more than enough time to get sponsors and venues in other countries and put on a lot of the sports that have been dropped. Lots of possibilities:

Canada - road and mountain cycling, marathon running and race walking (Calgary and Edmonton had bid for the 2026 games and this would give them a chance to attract more tourists to the prairies of Canada)
India - Twenty20 cricket, field hockey, shooting
Singapore - diving, freestyle wrestling
Malaysia – squash, badminton
New Zealand - rugby sevens (winter there but not a problem for rugby if held in Auckland or Hamilton)
Fuji - archery
Jamaica - beach volleyball
The Bahamas - rhythmic gymnastics (could be held outdoors)
Trinidad and Tobago - table tennis (could be held outdoors)
Barbados - triathlon

It would be easy to put any or all of these events on if they make an effort. They should be able to organize popular sports like rugby sevens, beach volleyball and triathlon in the next 3 months. But I bet they won't because like so many bodies these days they seem to be stuck at the level of a teenager and want to try to get away with putting their finger on the scales...

Agree 100%. There were a lot of noises on this last year. I follow badminton quite closely (it's "my sport") and the fact that this has been dropped is utterly ridiculous. Along with most other sports.

Like you say, it's easy enough to organise most of the events using existing infrastructure and facilities. Why they didn't bother is beyond me. Laziness? No... just incompetence.

t would not surprise me if this Commonwealth Games was the last one in the current format - its got too expensive to host leading to countries either dropping out the bidding process or surrendering their right to hold it.

The only reason its being held in Glasgow this year is because there is no public money being used to support it. Victoria in Australia are paying £100million as a contribution to the cost after they ditched their hosting agreement

I think that Victoria intended to build facilities which is why they could not host a slimmed down version. Glasgow still has its facilities. The Scots are very careful with their money so to a Scotsman £100 million is like £500 million!

Forgot all about the Commonwealth Games until yesterday when it was mentioned in the news that the opening ceremony was on in the evening.

I laughed incredibly hard when I discovered the games are not being shown on the BBC. That is going to massively cut down the amount of viewers and is not going to make sponsors very happy. I expect our tax money is being used to host these 'friendly' games. The event should be categorized as a must show on the BBC if they want it to survive.

The fartheads responsible for these slimmed down games are now saying slimmed down games is the way future games should be. How retarded can you get? These games are only slimmed down because the organisers obviously couldn't organize a pissup in a brewery.

The attempt to influence the results is obvious. If the home nations were any good at archery there would be archery in the park recently used for TRNSMT because it costs so little to put it on.

Looking again at my idea of hosting the full games over 5 to 6 different countries, with a good number of sponsors in every country it would be possible to expand the games a bit. Small island countries like Antigua and Barbuda, the Maldives, Cook Islands or Fiji could easily host sailing events using existing facilities. Lots of small countries could host skateboarding and climbing wall events using temporary facilities like the Paris Olympics did.

The games could get a full 12 days, which would make the sponsors and the general public happy.

Future Olympic games are not building new facilities they are using existing facilities at different sites around the host county and sometimes in other countries. Look at the upcoming 2030 Winter Olympics in France on Wikipedia, the long track speed skating is taking place in the Netherlands. With fiber optics, satellites and the internet for recording and broadcasting, having different sites around the world is not any more difficult than having different sites in one country. Different time zones would make life easier because the events would be spread out over the day.

The only thing holding back an expanded global games that excites hundreds of millions of people around the world is that the organisers are a pack of totally incompetent fartheads.
