DVD Recorder Panasonic DMR-EX769EB
Satallite receiver is Humax FoxsatHD Digital
My Location

Just moved into a new flat and we have bought a Humax Foxsat HD Digital satellite box and need help with conections, we are both 73 years old with poor eysight.

We have a Panasonic TX-32LMD70 television with freeview which has 2 scarts & 1 HDMI and a Panasonic DVD Recorder which also has 2 scarts & 1 HDMI.

Can anyone help me with the correct way to conect up to record both Freeview and Freesat please so as we can record freesat/freeview.

Does the Panasonic have Freeview built in?

If it doesn't then it'll mean you will have to record your Freeview programmes using the TV tuner which will mean you can't watch anything else whilest doing that.

You can record the Freesat by connecting the VCR scart to the DVD recorder. You will need to connect the DVD to the TV using the scart output on the recorder labelled TV or AV1 (or similar) - this will then mean you connect the Humax to the recorder using the other scart connection (on the recorder) which will probably be labelled VCR or AV2 (or similar). You can then set the DVD recorder to record off AV1 (which will record what the TV is displaying) or AV2 (which will record what the Humax is displaying).

Note that the recordings will NOT be in HD quality, just normal PAL definition.

If the DVD recorder DOES have Freeview then it will obviously simplify things as you will be able to use the recorder's menu to select programmes and times.

In order to get the best out of the Humax connect it to the TV using an HDMI lead. The TV will probably have to be "told" to use the HDMI input as the scart connection will take priority when the DVD recorder is switched on.

That should all work but there's sometimes a gotcha!

Thanks for teh info, I will have a go at the weekend.

The TV and the DVD recorder

The DVD does have Freeview.
Just one more question can it all be done with HDMI cables instead of Scart leads.

Not completely. If you want to record off the Humax that has to connected to the DVD recorder by scart. You can probaby do away with the scart lead from the DVD recorder to the TV though and replace that with an HDMI cable as you won't be recording off the TV.

This should leave you with HDMI cables from the Humax and DVD recorder to the TV and a scart lead from the Humax (VCR or AV2 output) to the DVD recorder (VCR or AV2 input).

That should all work! Note the emphasis on should - there's always a possibility of some incompatibility.
