I am contacting you to enquire if you know anything about connecting a pc to the serial port on the back of the sky digital box?

I want to be able to use my pc to control the digital box. the reason I want to do this, is I have a visual impairment and I cant see what is going on, on the television screen.

if I can control the box from my pc it will make life much easier for me.

I would appreciate any assistance you can give me in this matter.

Hi Martin,

I left this as I didn't know the answer and was hoping that someone else may have had information.

I would guess that the only way that you will find out will be to write to Sky or perhaps one of the digibox manufacturers. The only fly in the ointment would be the fact that Sky would not like people generally to have access to the serial port.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Samsung used to have a PC controlled update to their receivers

SEM (Electromechanical) rather than Samsung you know nowadays

All it does is allow the mouse to do the walking rather than the remote control

None of the skyboxes have it as the RS232 port is not enabled for connection to a PC

It may come one day if everybody complains

You can record the Sky-D remote (or any remote) signals onto a PC, then reproduce them as required.

A bit of software does the capturing and the same (or another) reproduces them, you can normally preset orders/sequences and sometimes even timers.

Eg one command on the PC emits ‘106’ or even goes through the menus etc.

Not quite sure if it would help you or not.

There are some other sites about it, some also sell the hardware (assembled) so all you would need to do is connected it up if you don’t feel like building it. Also some software is a lot more user friendly than that version, if you can’t find any info on google ill rack my brains and try to think where I saw it if you want-
