CrimeStoppers introduces a text service

CrimeStoppers, the crime-stopping UK independent charity, has starteda trial allowing members of the public to tell on alleged criminals throughtext message.

The service is being trialled in Tower Hamlets, a LondonBorough. If it’s a success, texting could be rolled out across Londonand the rest of the UKin the near future.

Keeping anonymity

Speaking about the trial, Kevin Anderson, CEO of AndersonSoftware, the firm that are providing CrimeStoppers with the anonymity software, said: *"Due to the massive popularity of textmessaging, we felt it was necessary to develop a secure and anonymous means ofeasy communication between mobile phone users and law enforcement."

The software, according to Anderson, is already used by over 600 lawenforcement agencies around the world. It is already being used by the Ontario, Canada,version of CrimeStoppers.

Saving Face

The texting service is another measure taken by the charityto entice younger members of the public to report crime in their area.

Just last month, CrimeStoppers unveiled its own page onsocial-networking site Facebook. On the page, viewers can access information onthe most-wanted UKcriminals.
