My Satellite Setup
Master Focus 90cm .Gigablue UHD Quad 4K on TM 2600 motor. *Tm 5402 HD M3, *Atemio Nemesis. *Not Used.

Does anyone know of a good company to recover the contents of the hard drive for the History teacher here. She took it to school for the IT man to look at and he said the drive is knackered. Its only photos and school work to recover but the drive spins and thats it. She had done backup but on the same hard drive.:-ohcrap
 
Put "hard drive data recovery" into google and any number of companies pop up.
 
Going back a few years the best utility I found was Spinrite from Gibson Research. It's still available new although it hasn't been revised for a few years (perhaps it doen't need it?).

Another possibility is Disk Internal's NTFS reader, which is available for free _http://www.diskinternals.com/download/NTFS_Recovery.exe. I used it to recover files from ahard drive of my own which was paying up and wouldn't boot the aptop it used to belong to.
 
Depending on what level the drive has failed at, you may be able to use some data recovery software.

I found that FileScavenger was one of the better recovery tools. It will scan faulty disks under some circumstances.
 
pcfileinspector was the one that I got on with, I've got it on the old PC, but I haven't seen it online for a while.

Whereabouts in S England are you ?
 
Thanks for the replies. As requested I got a s/h matching drive as the tech guy thought it maybe the circuit board. Now he thinks its the head thats duff. I can't put it in my computer as I can't see any spare connections to plug it into. I will look out for a cheap old computer and try it in that. Sunny....well at times Bournemouth.

I used one of these type of adaptors ebay 300401892012 (although not from this supplier) to connect up the misbehaving hard drive. It's a great bit of kit as it'll work with 2.5" and 3.5" IDE drives as well as SATA drives.
 
Ah, Quantum had a poor name with Fireball drives about six years ago, they may have improved but the forums were awash with drives not being recognised.
 
I think the drive contents will be lost. The tech guys charge a fourtune to recover data on these drives. But when the gadget comes I wil give it a try, otherwise bin it as I am not technical to swap parts over to get it to work.
 
I too have successfully used the adaptor mentioned for all types of drives, even managed with the infamous 2 HD stripe0 setup which is a rubbish attempt at a raid array. The power supply for this adaptor managed to power up the drive with thelazy motor to full speed before booting the pc thus the raid interlacing took place and the data could be copied off to USB stick. It only worked once though but that is all it takes to get the data.
