Decoder remote controls working the TV.

I know the Sky remote control can be coded to operate most televisions, but does the same apply to other decoder boxes from other manufacturers and if so, which ones? If not, I'll be tempted to keep my Sky box rather than by a new decoder as having to mess around with two handsets can be a pain at the best of times.

The only correct reply is - it depends!

Not every manufacturer equips their remote controls for mult-use functionality; you would would have to check by looking at the the remote itself for extra buttons to indicate this (buttons marked TV and DVD are usually a good indicator), reading the manual (yes, yes I know...) or even asking here specifically.

Personally I know that the Humax Foxsat HDR can control other devices although I haven't used this function myself.

My Foxsat HDR Telecommander control the HDR itself, my TV, a DVD player and a 25 year old Sony Hi-Fi.

Even SWMBO can drive it with ease.
 
Dream Multimedia remote controls work for most of TVs. Mine operates Dreambox itself and Philips TV.
 
One option would to be to see if universal remotes (E.G. One4All) have the receiver's brand & codes in the manual (you can check online by looking up models of universal remote controls that you might be interested in and looking at the manuals in PDF form), that way you can use a universal remote for TV, DVD, Satellite, DVR, VCR, CD, MP3, everything bar the kitchen sink really... :)
