I was talking to a mate last night and printer inks came up and I said that it was like the razor manufacturers many years ago who virtually give you the razor because they know you have to come back for the blades....well that and a couple of other things recently stirred some memories.

In the 60s.... there were 6 of us in the house 2 kids, parents and one set of grandparents. Dad used to have a swishy razor with a wheel on the handle that turned opening the head to change blades - I think it was called the slim twist. Gramps used a much older simpler razor which had 3 pieces where you unscrewed the handle and it came to pieces for cleaning and blade changes - he always used red Gillette blades but dad used blue Gillette.

These were both of the old 2 edge safety razor type before all the snazzy multi blade things came along. I can't really think of anything more basic, cheap to produce and generic than those blades..... but there was a gadget in the house for sharpening razor blades. I guess it was a hang on from wartime shortages (times was 'ard, lad!). I think it was chucked out years ago but have recently seen a couple of different versions of blade sharpeners at antiques fairs which prompted my memory.

Well, 50 years later there have been all the twin, triple, Fusion... etc. all claiming the best shave ever but to those in a cynical frame of mind just means ;'We'll be waiting when you need new blades!'; but it just keeps on.....Into my inbox came an ad for the Fusion ProGlide 3 in 1 Styler which combines a razor with a trimmer and can be picked up for around £16, but curiosity got the better of me and it seems a pack of 10 blades is 21 quid. At times like this I can sometimes hear my dad say (well he never actually said it but... well, you know!); 'What? 10 shillings for a packet of crisps!'

But, Lo and Behold, some enterprising company is making a razor blade sharpener. Not only money saving but these days you can also add the obligatory 'Save on pollution.'

Not only blades, the companies behind them have used the 'fashionable' advertising excuse, some also producing ranges of pre, during and post foams and creams. An absolute rip-off.

*Tip - if you have to buy blades to fit a certain stick, keep them out of the bathroom when not in use as the moisture in the air will blunt blades in days rather than months.

Or the missus'll pinch them for her legs etc!
