Hello everybody,

First of all i would like to thank all the people from Cyprus reporting about the reception conditions of the 28.2E/28.5E position which is the most important there. It's of big use. But since these aren't the only difficult positions on the island, i decided to open this thread where i hope to gather some more information. So let's start.

113E: Very low in the horizon only in eastern Cyprus. A reception could be possible with 3m in C-Band since in the Near East this bird can be gotten

110.5E: I doubt very much that somebody can get the C-Band since the official footprint covers with 29dbW northern Iraq.

105.5E: 3m should suffice everywhere

100.5E: Suppose this bird is a little stronger with its higher elevation, so maybe 2.4m are ok

96.5E: 2.40m or less for both C&Ku ?

93.5E: C-Band says India beam but that ain't true. I know that some frequencies can be received in Orestiada (NE Greece) on a 2.7m only !! So maybe 2.4m for Cyprus ?

91.5E: Seems impossible to me but you never know. Maybe the analogue 3880H can be seen with much LT on >3m ?

90E: 1.80m for everything ?

88E: In Israel the C-Band can be received with 3m. Any chance in Cyprus ?

87.5E: Success even in SE Austria on 3.70m !! So why not in CY.

83E: Widebeam seems no problem to me since partly received even on 1.2m in Greece but what about Zonebeam ?

80E: Suppose both C/Ku shouldn't be any problem on 2.40m

78.5E: The Thaicom Position is somehow difficult if speaking of the elder Thaicom 2 C-Band frequencies and in general the SCPCs with low SR. Suppose for full Thaicom 2&3 C-Band 3m are needed.

76.5E: 38dbW in C-Band and low SRs on some frequencies tell me that a 1.80m could be hard on the limit to get them all. Of course no Ku-Band since it beams to China.

75E: Here the interesting channel is 3980V TV Malagasy in analogue PAL. 37dbW tell me that a 1.80m should suffice even for this only active C-Band frequency. The Ku North and South beams should all be gotten easily with 1.20m or even less.

74E: Don't think that we have any chance on the C-Band even with >3m because of India beam

72E: C-Band on 39dbW but low SR and FEC 5/6, this lets me think that a 1.80m could be hard on the limit.

68.5E: 37dbW on the C-Band and 7/8 as FEC that leads me to hope a 2.40m can get everything. The interesting question here are the Ku-Frequencies. I know that a 1.20m in the Cyclades struggles to get them, so what about in CY ?

66E: 4015L in analogue Secam and in NE Zone Beam. Maybe with a monster dish of 5m and full LT some noise can be seen, but to be honest i don't think so. For the digital ones i see no hope to get them.

64E: West hemi frequencies are on 36-41dbW so a 2.40m should get all.

62E: The Ku-Mid East beam should be very easy and the C West hemi with >37dbW also could be seen with 2.40m but what about the Global beam with Manchester United on 4177L ? 31-36dbW do require bigger dishes.

60E: Anybody getting the Kazachstan Ku-Beam ? I know the footprint says no but in western Ukraine which is also far away it can be received on 2.40m. The Moscow beam should be received much easier.

57E: Suppose only 3910L Ethiopia can be receivedin CY with 2.40m+

56E: Maybe possible on bigger dishes since even in Slovakia this bird can be seen on only 1.40m

55E: Again Indian C-Band but still analogue !! So maybe possible also on >3m

49E: 42dbW and C-Band, rather strong but FEC 7/8 requires bigger diameter so a 1.80m could be required to get also this.

38E: Paksat can also be gotten in central Europe so here i think we have similar not even better conditions. Think of 3m to get all.

36E: Well Sesat is not worth to speak of but W4 Russia beam is beeing received on 2.40m if we take a look on Titosat's website.

33E: Here we have RTB Burkina Faso 3898R and the Kenya Mux on 11590H. For latter i don't see any hope even with monster dishes of >5m but probably RTB can be seen on 3.70m or more. The Eurobird 3 A/B/C spots with its data streams i also regard as impossible to get in CY.

30.5E: Alright, CY is close to the arabian world but this is an old bird and i think that also there a 1.50m is needed.

28.5E Here we are on the Eurobird 1 position and the really difficult ones must be the Fixed/NW Europe. 2.40m or less for all ?

28.2E: 2.40m for all 2A/B North&South or more ? 2D from what i've understood can be partly gotten beginning with 2.7m Offset in Pafos and 4.2 PFA in Ayia Napa and all frequencies ? Has anybody tried a 6m ?

23.5E: A real hard satellite must be this with the german speaking area spot. Anybody with a 3.70m that can catch something ?

19.2E: Oh yes, here are the devils. For full reception i think we gotta consider >=6m but to be more precise i'll split it up to pay tv packages. The most difficult must be Premiere that even in Athens needs 4.50m . Astra 1F is the hardest there suppose also in CY. Then i'd say D+ which is splitted on 1C/1E/1F/2C. UPC unfortunately also chose an 1E transponder so also not easy at all. The 1G/H i know that their reception starts on 1.20m but to speak of uninterruptable and full reception they need 1.80m Offset or 2.40m PFA. The big question is, which frequencies can one get more if the dish diameter rises step by step reaching the maximum to get all ?

13E: Still the Superbeam is difficult. In GR (except of the NW) the HB2 are much stronger than HB3&4. HB4 will be leaving to become Nilesat 103 in a while so things will improve a bit but the real hope is that all the TPS and Sky Italia Frequencies will move to 7A+8 when they are launched. But for now i dare to doubt that a 3m can have reception of all Superbeam frequencies in CY. I heard a long time ago about a 5m in Pafos for Sky Italia but maybe it was left from old days and a smaller does the job.

5E: Well here we have Sirius 2 FSS + Nordic and the devil Sirius 3 that only carries a Nordic beam. Fear also that 5m or more are needed to get full Viasat. The FSS should be easier, maybe 3m ?

1W: Thor 2, well the footprint says no, but down to Athens it can be gotten full on 2.40m PFA but CY is far away so maybe 4m ? And what about the C-Band of Intelsat 10-02 ? 2.40m or more ?

4W: Well another devil: The Amos 1, here with the very weak Hungary beam that even in Athens needs 3m or more to get all. Amos 2 is stronger and can be gotten there with 1.20m. Of course the Israel beams are very strong in CY. The hope is that Amos 3 which will take over Amos 1 frequencies in 2007 will be just as strong as Amos 1 so maybe a 3m could do the job for everything.

5W: The AB3 Superbeam well, maybe on a 3m ?

8W: The old Telecom 2D France beam another one that i'd call it impossible to get. I remember in old days in Rodos 4m were required, so in CY 10m ?

27.5W: I think good results in C-Band should be possible with 2.40m.

30W: Well one Hispasat 1D frequency in much western Rodos is lost even on 3.10m but i hear of 1.80m Offset or 2.40m PFAs used in CY for 1D, 1C is even stronger and can be gotten on 1.20m. The interesting thing would be to know if we speak of 100% reception in CY with the bigger dishes.

40.5W: Should be very hard to get this since even in Athens a 2.40m PFA makes trouble and loses some frequencies in bad weather but you never know, maybe on 3.70m or more in CY ?

43W: On a 1m should not be any problem if the SW horizon can be seen.

P.S.: I did not add the stronger satellites that can be gotten with 1.20m max.

Everybody that can confirm the reception please tell us some words about your dish diameter, receiver, LNBs, position and which frequencies you get with the value signal quality. Also any corrections about my data are very welcome.

Thanks for your time and hope to get some improvement on this big black hole of knowledge.

Greetings to all :)

Come on, so many people with big dishes in Cyprus and nobody doing DXing ?

I think you'll find that many of them are locked on 28.2E. :)

Sure Rolf, but not all of them. Seems to me that almost all that receive what they want don't see it necessary to inform the rest how well their reception is. My opinion is that big dish users have to exchange information like meteorology enthusiasts.

Hi Deep Blue

I read your post and thanks for the info
I've only got a 80cm dish for Hotbird on the east of the island
I get good reception from the widebeams(60%) but this probably
isnt the info your after

Regards

Indeed all the Hotbird Widebeams are beeing received quite easily. The following 7A+8 are predicted to be a little weaker in Cyprus, somewhere in between 43 and 48dbW so it might be that your 80cm could be on the limit but let's see when they are up. Often footprints differ from the real conditions especially on the edge or outside of the footprint. That's why practical data is important and even stronger satellites are worth to mention as you did odellp, thanks for that :)
I just left them outside because the thread would have been much more longer than it is now.

Anybody else ?
