Here's somethingI don't think I've seen anyone comment about anywhere else. There are some genuine digibox remotes without the capability to control TVs.

I first found one of these remotes in a kit with a remote eye (don't remember whose). I've just got another brand new one and it also is the same type.

You can identify them by taking the battery cover off and looking in the recess in the pointed end. In remotes that can control TVs there is a small piece of PCB with 6 holes showing in the bottom. The other type have no PCB there. I suspect the 6 holes are some way of programming the remote in the factory.

The new remote came in a bag with label:

RC 1600/00 0P

The question I have to ask is why? Why produce some of the remotes without this facility?

Just looked in mine and couldn't see the PC board, but must confess that whilst I have had the odd one which hasn't controlled a particular TV, I've not known of one that wouldn't control a TV at all.

So are you saying that it does or doesn't control your TV?

Got 2 remotes in front of me at the moment. The one that does control the TV has the PCB with 6 holes showing in the small rectangle in the bottom of the recess.

The new one (which doesn't control the TV) just shows the inside of the front plastic cover. One other thing I've just noticed is that the label warning about changing the batteries within 10 mins has "Sky rev4" printed along the lower edge.

I'm saying that I haven't come across any remote that doesn't control a TV, just the odd older one which wouldn't control a brand new TV (some older ones do not have the newer codes).

The one I am looking at has the standard notice in the battery compartment

Sory, forgot to give the details off the sticker in the batery compartment:

Remote that doesn't control the TV-

RC 1600/00

OP00 0348 - 21

Remote that DOES control the TV-

RC 1600/00

OP000007 7A1

Not much of a difference. Incidentally if you try to put a valid code (such as 584 for my Philips) it appears to go through process with LED blinking except at the end you don't get the triple blink.

Hmmmmm. What's going on?

Can't do it now, but will have alook in the garage where I should have a couple of old ones and see what they say.

As far as I know (so it might have changed recently) there are only three versions of the Sky remote, the original one and the second revision look and are programmed exactly the same. The only difference being the second one has updated TV control codes (which makes it very difficult to tell them apart, there is a way I think, but I cannot remember what it is). These two versions have only the lettering ‘Sky’ written in white on the top blue button.

The third revision says ‘Sky’ on the top blue button, but also has the crescent underneath the letters. I think the main difference is that the third one responds slightly differently when you are programming it for a TV, it either blinks to you more or less times than the older ones.

I’m not sure which of these have the three pins in the battery compartment and which don’t, (don’t have any sky remotes here :( ) but it would be interesting to see.
