Digital satellite indoors, oh yes

With the loss of Golf TV I wanted some sport, like fta eurosport, oh yes, as you guys know on 19.2.

Anyway, I bought another receiver, fortec star beta 40 pounds from Maplins, can sometimes crash if one messes to much, meaning moving channels, but seems alright if just adding and deleting, software I suspect.

I took a spliter back, no happy, but did eventually conceed the manager that the mindish came with LNB and had the splitter back.

I've since bought a 65cm dish and had the sky's minidish LNB 0.6db on it, and guess what, not hardly any difference.

I'm talking in some cases a 43cm dish inside behind double glazed windows and curtains shut, and 70 to 80% quality signal on Astra 19.2

I'm going to give you the lot, share.

Just got come today, only rang up yesterday, smart lnb, titanium one, wish my luck, and I'll give you results.

This is because on 13.0 I'm struggling, around 30 to 41% best to get the sport channel and marine biz, and some others.

The reason for all this, I saw going over the chippy this van satellite, so on.
Did motions of wind down your window and asked the young lad and guy in the driving seat eating away if possible to get satellite in your bedroom, both say no chance, words to that effect.

I'm living proof, you can, it's nonsense, even with minidish, 16.0, onr of them barely, and, oh least what 10 different satellites, for sure on the 65cm fortec maplin bought one.

Just hoping this new LNB 0.2db will least give me slightly better, if only 5% better on the weak channels or I give up.

I hope this and the information that follows helps people.

Because I suspect, like the signs of the times we are in today, people don't want to tell the truth, meaning they would be out of a job if they said, yeah sure we tried it, eyesore, but if you can put up with that, sure, can get it quite well.

So those of you out there, no offense, with hundreds of pounds worth and you massive 1m dishes, spare a thought that it is more than possible in doors through double glazing net curtains, and curtains shut at night even in the minidish one to easily pick up 28.2, 28.5, 19.2, 13.0 most channels, hoz one's weak, vertical great, unless power better, but I'll be posting my findings on this for you all, share and share alike, amen.

After this I doubt I'll be stopping by or using again, might ask to be deleted, lol.

Anyway enjoy all.

glad you are experimenting with your setup Lee, ive often used a dish indoors for 19east etc

not too sure about your christian rant though....not interested :)

I've used indoor dishes before, I even got into the What Satellite magazine with my setup, but yes, it's great having a dish indoors, as long as you're a batchelor like myself!!! :D

Have removed the reference to religion from your post, we believe this to be a personal thing and best kept that way. ;)

Unfortunately whilst your information may be new to you, it is well trodden ground on satellite forums, particularly this one, where many of our members are enjoying satellite reception using dishes behind windows, have a look in the Pictures of Members Systems section, there are several threads regarding this very subject.

PS. Congratulations on getting it working.

lol, not religious, faith, lol, anyway, no, no, point I was making, seeing as the posts I've seen when searching, probably new one's, is that while those of you into it for years, and tried and tested know, in my searching the net I have not seen any minidish inside.

of course you have pictures, the 60cm plus, I'm talking standard though:

7E 11.452 30 to 40%, mind you was probably on the 65cm one, but I've found little difference between that and the 43 cm mesh, yes mesh sky one.
9.9E 11.958v 60%

5E best were 12.341 H 40%
12380 H 40%, most were below, not so good, my few years old humax is better, seen it at 22% picture fine, not this fortec rubbish though, lol.

Anymore:

At bird 3 5W 11.591 30%

Your all laughing, so what I have them at 50, 70, 80%, yes on your 80cm, fantastic LNB outside, motorized, golden, such and such dish.

I'm just saying, not being trouble or big headed, letting those of you that don't and those new that it is possible and we are being conned to believe it first must be outside, I have the satellite mag here, HDTV thingy, buy in WHSmith, and it will say things like 70cm in the south and I'm like, yeah right, lol, other times 45cm, or 55cm and I can't get them.

I'm reading a lot of posting, people saying can't get, I could not get the far East one's, that was until I tilted the dish further down still from the 28.east one's and they started to come in at around the 30% mark again, not locking.

8W 12:566 v not noted the rate, but must have been coming through, or breaking up, highlighted it in green you see.
12.649v as well

16E real struggle, but barely 30 to 40% once I got the 11.304v 13 channels etc on there.

Astra 23.5 11.914 H 60 to 71%
11.992H 61%

Okay these are on the 65cm one and with like a 2 metre cable, noted down stairs it much worse, longer cable and join in etc.

The point being I've read where some are saying, yes no lead in windows, single pane only, this and that, no as I keep stating and more than just your astra and hotbird, hence those above, through a double glazing window, two so there is the massive few inches in the middle as well, windows not clean, through the net curtain, have a car shade on at the top of it, with the ordinary curtains closed as well and with the rubbish you'd guys would say for anything other than sky, sky minidish 0.6db LNB.

So finally all I'm saying is as a massive reference to those searching the net, like I was, to help them out, do not believe when you read and hear about you can not get it inside on a minidish.

Obviously my bedroom faces south, I live in a dip, hill the other way, so, in fact dishes will work best lower down, lol, have to laugh, if I showed you pics you'd say yeah right and laugh, you can't even clear those houses sloping roofs across the way there, not possible, but it is, lol.

Anyway, give you few more % below, still not tried the new LNB yet, :)

On the 13.0 East Hotbird one (% are signal quality of course)

10971 H 32% no pic, hates horizontal, using the skew on 1 as fas goes helps, but loses few % on the 28.East Sky Hoz one's then.

11566 H 63 to 69%
12245 H 69% max (Where it flashes up to, otherwise say about 61 constant or slightly above)
12207 H 71% max
12303 V 70% max
12380 V 70% max
11585 V 71% max
12577 H 63% max
11604 H 61% max
11747 H 51% max
11054 H sport channel have had 40 to 49% at best most times only 31%, hence no pic or break up of it, hence new lnb.
11804 V 71% max
12597 V 71% max

Can not get to lock on and save the following:

10.892 H
10.930 H

However I did get once sometimes the 11.013 H, but the picture often broke up, depends how well I manually turn it, alter height, etc.

So in conclusion the sky minidish designed for Sky at 28E and those strong channels say on 19.2 and 13.0 can be got behind double, oh you know, lol, which any sane satellite so called specialist will say simply impossible.
One can only concluse therefore the following:

They are telling lies, because do them out of business.
They themselves don't even know.
Who knows.

The one on the left would not work to well to the left, but there where it is now is a gap between houses at the back, but you can see the one outside, mine is high up, this will be discontinued now, happy with inside one's, no wind, no snow, lol.
Also it will be only a few inches from the window and curtains when drawn, the front of the dish touches.

The one on the right, erected today for downstairs, is couple plud feet back, on the back of my computer table, so quality, not great, but is the minidish, yes look carefully see the cat as well, had to heighten it up and removed little shelf I put in for plants, signal went up then enough to watch, this is probably with some 60 feet of cable and join in it, using f-connectors of course, no solder job.

Please remove if not allowed, let me know how I can attach, never done really via a forum, even those I've run, so no offense meant, no advertising, hence nothing else being on there, okay.

But I truly wanted you all to have an idea of what I've been talking about.

No wonder we all get cancer, the signals are stronger than a lot of people think, more robust than you think, is what I'm saying and that message needs to be spread.
As to the effects, well, anyone's guess, if anything I'd have thought be better, I'm reflecting signals back the other way, hmm, not sure about the poor cat though, I love her dearly, but asking for trouble lying in the window, especially now.

Thanks guys anyway, oh might let you know when I start very soon, need a cuppa now, on this new Smart Titanium LNB, probably be no better, always the way, waste of money. :).

That is pics wise, otherwise in bedroom they are reversed.

Here's one I found quickly: http://www.satellites.co.uk/satelli...llite-installations/47732-ultimate-setup.html

Not really quite sure what your point is, as the post rambles a little, Who are "they", the ones telling lies?

I've not heard any specialist satellite installer say that using a minidish through a window is impossible, particularly not on this forum. They may say difficult, or perhaps inadequate for some satellites, or not ideal with a particular type of glazing, but not impossible, unless it is a very weak satellite for this region you are wishing to receive.

Of course you may find that if you ring an installation company and ask them to come and try to install a dish inside, they may show a distinct lack of interest, as there is a high failure rate and the customer isn't normally prepared to pay for the wasted time if it doesn't work.

PS. Have removed your live links, if you want to show photos please upload them using the manage attachments button, click on advanced post.

IVe got a zone 2 sky mesh dish in the spare room attachd to a mic stand. The LNB is almost touching the double glazed window, but still 28 east and 19east isnt too much of a problem.

Sateuropa do a window dish mount, it enables the dish to be mounted upside down and hence be closer to the window. :)

So far, not better, same readings as I got with the minidish, so my point is, forget your bigger dish your titanium this and that and 0.2db, which I've read can't be achieved anyway, lol, my point is as the pics showed, it works through more than I've seen so far includes the posting it will never work, he had a clear window, no nets, no curtains drawn.

Anyway was fun, thanks guys, take care, I'll be doing more testing, and getting the pictures now on the marine biz one, but no better than I had achieved with the sky minidish LNB, go figure springs to mind, but might not be aligned right, seems to like the lnb being pointed more down, not to the middle of the dish itself, weird eh.

Oh yeah at Maplins where the manager was bwing funny, just did not want this exhange and lose out was making lif awkward, saying well, no this, not sure that, well, giving me the run around so to speak anyway, along those lines, very first time I got into this, May 2003, panic set in, rang up, no chance, you'll need a meter, oh no I thought, digital one's so expensive.
Then had a another go, phew got it, lucky really, now it's fairly easy, just use the internal reciever signal meter, no worries.

What you taking with your tea m8!!!!

do you ever get time to watch TV??????

dave

lol, of late no, and so far the titanium is rubbish, meaning no better than the sky lnb, supposed to be 0.4db difference, which we know is all nonsense anyway, but I read sky one set up for their dishes, being more oval, so I expected least the more proper lnb to work.
Having said that on fortec's own site they show the more square looking one, whatever you call it.
And it is cappachino in the afternoon, tea in morning, :).

My advise, anyone wanting basic satellite with strong signals and not allowed permission to have one outside, try the minidish inside, providing of course you face the right direction and forget your big dish and super cool low lnb, waste of time.

So I have discovered now due to the middle, not sure what you call it, column perhaps between the two windows and perhaps other factors that moving the dish about gets much better results, annoying as it is.

Satellite mag says 80cm, but I can get, never know if it's the new LNB or just the better position, fact I've changed the set up, meaning stand holding it, but I get 5.0E 12341 and 12380 and 12418 all horizontal and now at 51% compared previous best of only 41%.
Also I have 42E 11804 V 51%
11892 V and 11996 V

39E 12524 V 53%
12688 V 61% max, average stable always say 3to 5% below that.

Oh and finally, might be be the nice weather, sunny, make the most of it, bad weather on the way, but I did get the 13East's 10930H one in, but failed still on the 10892 H one.
Oh and wow, even the marine biz one at last was up, this was 11013 think it managed some 45% plus, previous best was like 41%.
And the sport channel at last, that was high and coming through.

The dish tends to work best slightly lower, almost if not in some cases the lnb arm on the cill, is that sil, cil, anyway, all weird and wonderful stull.

I suspect if I used the 43cm mesh sky dish zone 1 with new lnb there would be little different, going through the double glazing windows, net curtains that are not straight, waved across the window and with normal material curtains drawn at night.
Actually I'm quite surprised.

However final conclusion before I leave, what I have learned, patience, want no one saying, you said you could get it, ordered cheap sky stuff and can't, that depends on where you have, height, what is out your right facing south window, tall trees, maybe houses, apartments, so forth, experimenting and lots of patience is needed.

But my point all along has been you have nothing to lose, okay, but a few bucks, if you want to have a go, better still, have a friend, lend you a box, and all you got to do it buy a dish.
Apart from the eyesore you save loads, cutting out the middle man, not effected by the winds, outside weather as much, so long as you can face south pretty much, up fairly high enough, like not bungalow, second floor normal house, bedroom, so on, you might be surprised and fine.

But ask someone that installs them in a van, with the name on the side, satellite specialists for instance and they will tell you a flat no.

As for radiation, cancer, who knows, keep close to the window, if you have big enough room, should be okay, might block, reflect the sun better back out your room and reduce the heat, if you buy the solid 65 cm dish from maplins, fortect one, like me.

Anyway have fun.

I've showed that it can be done, getting some 10 different locations plus.

Those saying, oh need 60cm min and nothing in the way and, even window open, or single pane, and you'll get the astra 19.2 and 28.0 and saying nothing more, are either being cautious not to mislead, be it on their own head otherwise, 'You said...' Fair enough, or not realizing how easy it can be.

i think everyone knows it is possible to get a signal through the window, in fact, if you install clear plastic roof tiles you can get a signal through the roof as well .. I started life with a dish through the window (in the d2mac days) as my mum wouldnt let me put a dish on the wallO-zzz , Tv1000 was great, the late night films were an eye opener at 16:-rofl2...

I thought I'd post this seeing how Analoguesat hasn't yet, it's a Zone2 dish on an Analoguesat Patented Universal Dish Mounting Device (aka a car tyre!!!) in a student's dorm room at university:

http://www.selkirkshire.demon.co.uk/analoguesat/windowdish2.html

As for the Titanium LNB, some say they're better than other LNBs in performance, others say the opposite, it all depends on how yours was assembled as they're not all 100% identical, and also they don't work well on oval dishes as they need the correct feedhorn, try a Wistron one instead as they're supposed to be better than the older LNBs supplied with the dishes... :)

As for not seeing minidishes indoors, well, I think I lost the pictures on my other computer, but, I'm 100% positive I posted a couple of my 43cm dish indoors on 28e and 30w, probably a couple of years back, or it may have been on another forum (my memory's not very good!!), but still, I did have a very good indoor signal on both on an even smaller dish than yours, but that was well before I knew about proper dishes, upside-down dishes and even flat-panel antennas (squarials), it's all fun... :D

Well, I haven't a clue what I did with those pictures of my Zone1 minidish, but they're definately gone as I accidentally wiped my other computer, losing everything in the process... :(

But, on a lighter note, I did get an old BSB minidish, retrofitted with a modern LNB, to work on my floor in the living room of my old house, about 7 feet away from the window, see here:

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/analogue-systems/57833-bsb-minidish.html#post498366

:D

I have cut the thin top cap off the sky's minidish LNB and seen a 4 to 6% inprovement in signal.
I would only advise this for inside dishes obviously only.

I'm contemplating the same with the new Smart Titanium LNB, but would obviously void the warranty which claims is 5 years.
Yes 2cvbloke, that's what I've been saying, only got into it in May 2003 really and only this year messed about to any great degree. So as for analogue could not say reallly.
But clearly the digital signal are a lot more robust.

I had a Sharp LNB for my old minidish and I also took the casing off aswell as remove the plastic bung from inside the feedhorn, in my case there was little improvement!!! :D

I think I got into the satellite hobby about the same time as yourself, I was planning on re-using an old white Amstrad-Fidelity dish, but never got the ladders to access the dish so I just got a minidish and moved into the attic of my mum's old house... :D

As for robustness, I'd say analogue was better as if there was heavy rain and thick clouds in the air, Digital signals on a minidish tend to just pixellate (or squibble (based on the squeaky popping sound and the random coloured squares) as I like to call it) or completely dissappear, whereas analogue, although a bit sparkly, would still be there and watchable... :)

In my current house I don't have any window-views of the south so I can't have any indoor dishes, I do have my porty dish outdoors though (well, the dishface itself is currently indoors due to the rough weather), but I would like to get a tripod setup outdoors so I can pop my salvaged 80cm dish on it to try and find 13e (the one satellite I have yet to actually find!!! :D )... :D
