Dish in garden: Scotland help

Hi,

I live in Scotland in a housing association house. When we moved in a letter from them said, that the "dish should be installed in side or the back gable, but not on the front". It and the contract does not say that must install it on the gables, and you cannot install it in the garden.

As I am tuning into Sirius, the clearest line of sight is in the garden. So I installed it. Now the maintenance officer came on surprise check, and asked me to remove.

Does he have rights to do that? The letter or the contract does not say that you can't put it in the garden. What are legal aspects to this?

You need to check EXACTLY what rules the housing association have about dish placement.

Then follow their rules - for example many places wont let you drill into exterior walls due to the perceived possibility of structural damage.

Unfortunately if the rules mean you cant have a dish in the ideal place then you need to find somewhere else to put it.
 
I don't know what the legal aspects of it are, but if the garden is yours, and the contract doesn't say you cant put it there, then surely they have no right to complain about it.

I'd be tempted to say that you won't remove it, as you are within the terms of your contract, so get stuffed!
 
It would also help to know the size of dish, a 2 metre reflector would be difficult to install anywhere except the garden.

Ah, unfortunately a 1.2m is not the easiest thing to hide, especially when bolted onto a wall.

However since the letter confirms the 'dish should be installed in side or the back gable' then you should of course fit it there, but you will need some heavy duty T/K brackets and a decent bit of steel pipe.

There is no exclusion based on dish size within their letter, and you have confirmed permission, so go for it. Indeed, you could probably get away with something much bigger (though they have already seen the 1.2m, so best to stick with it)

Budget on about £100 for the additional materials and probably a half days work by a professional to get it up and running.

Additional material? Are you saying that I need to move it from the garden to the wall?
 
You could ask for a 'special dispensation', state that the regulations have been drawn up with a view to receive Sky TV broadcasts - and haven't accounted for reception of 'other signals' (which it is your right to receive - under EU regulations).
It might work.............

The main "moaning" of the officer is "dish is an eyesore in the garden".

1. Well how about neighbours garden grown with weeds, filled with recylable garbage, broken sofa set, which is sitting there for 6 months.

2. Another neighbour's childrens slides, house, etc.

3. Visualise a 1.2 m dish in the side gable, which will be visible from miles away.

Are these are not eyesores?

I have proposed the bugger to camouflage the dish by painting it green, and having bushes around it.

Why rock the boat ? There is nothing in the letter prenting the o/p from installing the 1.2m as long as it is on the rear, or side gable.
Once you start arguing with the people that write these regulations you are onto a hiding to nothing. Do as they say , follow the letter wording exactly, and then if they object, you have a leg to stand on.
 
Well, the letter does not say " you cant put it in the garden".

If I put it on the side gable, I need a super specialist cherry picker to clear the roof line. That is a £ 1000 job. If I had that kind of money, why would I live in a rented housing association house.
 
It might be worth checking your local council regulations, as they probably supercede the housing association rules, in most of the country you're allowed up to a 1 Metre dish, without requiring planning permission, do you have planning permission for your 1.2 Metre dish?

I think your idea of painting the dish, and using plants to help hide it, is a good one but if a neighbour has already complained I doubt if this will appease them.

Personally I agree with you it will look far more of an eyesore stuck on the gable end than sited in the garden, try politely discussing your ideas and if possible get some pictures, off the internet, of painted dishes, to show them how it will look.
