Hello, which dish size is needed to get NS4 transponders at 10 and 7 East? This question comes from a friend working in a little TV broadcaster. He asked to me but I'm not sure. We are in Milan, northern part of Italy. Any advice? Thanks.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Whilst forum members would be happy to pick up signals with whatever they have to hand, a broadcast company would use link budget calculations to determine the equipment required before parting with the money.

So, they are a very little TV station, and I believe they must receive some specific service from Hypermux frequency at 10 East (I have no more details yet). I hope to have chance to test again that Novelsat receiver when my friend will get one, I just tested such box some years ago. The problem is they must arrange a specific dish, I believe that 1.8m is enough but I'm not sure, so I asked here. Now I check the link posted above by William (Hi William, hoping you are well). Thanks.

This link may help you,

I forgot to mention that I'm speaking about Ku band transponders, not C band. The problem would be modulation type (NS4 16APSK). Thanks.

A 1.8m or 2.0m dish should be OK.

The picture attached below is a screen shot taken today showing an NS4 signal with modulation of 16APSK in Ku-Band from 10.0E that was locked using a 2.0m dish
The link margin with a 2.0m dish is 4.59db.

My Satellite Setup
OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC

Deep in the Boonies in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
Be very careful as to the size of the dish used for re-broadcast purposes in a small TV station. The Ku band is severely affected by heavy rain and snow.

This is why we always went 6 to 9 dB bigger on the recommended dish size,(approximately 3 dB for each 100 mm diameter increase) if satbeams recommends a 1 metre dish then go with a 1.3 to 1.5 metre dish. Less fade out problems with a higher gain dish.(2 metre would work fine)

In some parts of the US we used 8 foot dishes for Ku band signals.

The threshold of reliable reception above ground noise was 10.5-11.5dB at Ku band frequencies when I were a lad.

So what has changed ? Certainly not the weather.

Very useful advice, thank you. Yes I know that, in fact I thought and told to my friend that 1.8m would be fine but I was not sure so I asked here. And you confirmed my thought. Thanks.
