Have a friend up in Kilmarnock who is moving onto a motorised setup.
Anybody up that neck of the woods who can give a dish size recommendation.
Without getting silly lol
 
Is 1.8m silly? What is your friend looking to receive? I would a say a decent 1m dish with a decent DiSEqC motor will be enough to satisfy 90% of us out there.
 
Depends on his interests and priorities, but for the usual strong birds like 13E, 19E, 5W and many others 80 or 90cm is suitable. Maybe 1m.

Reasonably easy to set up and maintain and unlikely to work the motor too hard.

And he'll get 90% plus of the Channels that folk with a 1.2m would get.

A 1.1m with a decent motor then :)
 
A 1.1m is getting towards the limit of most common H-H Motors, especially if sited in an exposed position as wind loading can cause huge stresses.

Those motors are specified for "up to 1.2m dishes": I've used a 1.1m on one but took it off the wall and re-fixed it on a sheltered patio mount having seen it bouncing around in a stiff breeze!

So 90cm to 1m max then.
Not sure how exposed it will be.
 
Shame he's not a bit closer to me, as I have both a 1m and a 1.1m sitting idle in the Play Room, since I recently reverted to my 80cm.
 
Paisley punter here (Not originally from here so I've forgoed the smack addiction hobby lol) I've been happy enough with my true 80cm (I.e. Not a bloody TD78) but I'd say go with a 1 metre to be in with more a chance for feeds and stronger 26E etc.

A Triax TD90 would be a good bet for sure, apart from the awful elevation adjustment on the back of it. A good solid long lasting dish.

Or a Gibertini OP100L, as they are light in weight, being Aluminium.
