hi chaps what would be the best box out of these to dm500s vs tm5400

whats the pros and cons i already own the tm5400 but thinking of buying a dm500s

I have never owned a tm5400 but I have found the dm500s a little limiting. Its cheap and cheerful and a great first box but after a little while you feel you want install that extra plugin and record etc so after about 6 months I upgraded mine to dm600. I would spend the little extra and get a dm600 rather than the dm500.

I think a better comparison between TM and DM would be the TM500, it has basically the same features as a DM500 but (IMO) looks better and any DM500s you buy now will almost certainly be a clone, there are no TM clones available AFAIK.

The TM500 runs the same linux enigma firmware the DM500 does, so you have Newcamd, CCCam and OSCAM emulators available for any cards you may wish to use.

personally cant stand the dream box

no usuls for motors
pain in the back side to use
loads are faulty

i would also recomend tm500 or tm800 for HD

the tm5400 usb + super is also a very good box but you cant programme for card sharing
reliability as you expect for technomate, looks better and does exactly same stuff as the dream box

OK, Pros and cons all the above mentioned receivers

The TM5400 is a cracking box either way you look at it. Its a good box for somebody who is just starting to get into sat TV. There are no issues with motor control, It still looks good, and there are still a few things open on keys :D

The cons of this box is as said in the last post you can't share as such. It is possible through the serial RS232 port but its very very limited.

If my memory serves me correctly our favorite Albanian did something with one of his firmware updates a year or so back which did give limited channels.

The DM500 is OK for single satellite or multi satellites through DISEqC switch and a set of static dishes, Its a waste of time through a motor. There are also issues with some of the firmware available for this box. Its also almost impossible to buy a genuine DM500 these days so we can discount the loads are faulty bit.

no usuals for motors

USALS works fine if setup properly on my Dreamboxes, although i prefer just to use DISEqC commands as its more acurate for some of the fringe satellites like Astra3a.

loads are faulty

Reliability has never been an issue with any of my genuine Dreamboxes, other than the DM500 which was clone anyway. My DM7020S (Not a 7020Si) is still going strong as to is my other DM7020Si. The DM7020S is nearly five years old, the 7020Si is 3 years old. My first TM500 went tits up a few months after i had it.

pain in the back side to use

The large majority of TM Linux Firmwares are just modified Dreambox enigma 1 images, so how can they be a pain to use when the images are usually built from very similar CVS basecode? :-DOH!

The menus on an image from a Dreambox and a Technomate Linux box are usualy in near enough the same place, and most of the Technomate images use Skins designed for the Dreambox. The web interface is also identical for both.

Support is better for the Dreambox than the Technomate Linux units as there are more of the major teams writing images for them than there are for the TM boxes. Its also worth mentioning that available plugins are 9 times out of 10 designed to run on the Dreambox then modified to run on other linux varients.

The Dream Multimedia CVS is open source, The Technomate CVS isn't.

Dreamboxes very rarely get stuck in a boot loop which is more than i can say about the TM Boxes.

Its easier and quicker to install a new image onto a DM than a TM.

looks better and does exactly same stuff as the dream box

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Its down to personal taste at the end of the day.

Nuff Said :D

I have had a TM1000D and TM1500Ci+, didn't see the point of going to the 5000 series as it would have been a step backwards after the Dreambox but they were both good boxes at the time due to the ammount of stuff that was open on keys. (The good old days)

Don't get me wrong theres nothing wrong with the TM linux boxes as i've also had quite a few myself ( 2x TM9100, 1x TM9100 Super, 1x TM500, 2x TM600). I just found them very limited compared to the Dreambox due to the lack of new firmware.

There were more images available for my old ABCom IPBox 200s than the TM linux boxes and the IPBox is a box that most people haven't even heard of.

The Technomates also aren't as forgiving as the Dreambox. Its far easier to recover a Dreambox than a Technomate when things go wrong.

As with anybox you have to do your research and make your own mind up which is better for you. I would recommend a Dreambox DM600pvr over any of the Technomate linux boxes.

I myself are looking at treating myself to one of the Vu+ boxes for crimbo :D

i would also recomend tm500 or tm800 for HD,

TM500 is not hd nor pvr, TM800 IS HD but no software support: my opinion get a TM600 PVR sd for first linux box

Like i said, very limiting with regards to Firmware. Only 2 Teams writing images for these units to date.

DS Team, (Sateo & Dingo) And The Underground Resistance Team. I got bored of the TM500 & 600 very quickly.

Its just a Pity that EDG didn't do an image for it like they did on the TM9100.

If your going to go with a Technomate, don't bother with the 500 or 600 as they are too limiting, get the TM9100. I don't ever think support for these boxes will ever be that good IMHO.

I notice that Technomate have just brought out the TM5402 HD, it has a network port and apparently capable of running the Cams that use it. Could be popular for Dreambox/Linux haters.

Yeah, it will work as a CCcam client. I would expect being a technomate a relatively easy setup and menu structure. Won't work as a server though, but that's getting more and more common worryingly,

Nothing like keeping the shape we all know and love. I see there are already patches for it over on pimps.

Might be worth having a look at this one, if anything to bring back the images of nostalgia when i had the TM1500 stuck under the TV :D

The TM500/600 are fine for anyone that wants to set up a basic system and just use it day-to-day to actually watch telly.
A Dreambox is better if you plan on tinkering with it constantly because the bigger scene obviously means more development and support.

The only thing that concerns me with the TM500/600 is the lack of support as i've stated before.

If a new image is release with a bug its usually a few months at least before its rectified. I don't honestly think there will be much support for these in the next few years if any.

Its also worth baring in mind that not all emus will run straight away without some modification, and since its starting to look more and more like development for CCCam is nearing its end, theres no saying that the new emus will work with the TM.

It was a similar thing with the Triple Dragon receiver. Cracking receiver but it couldn't run CCCam. a backdoor way round was to use Incubus which could connect to a CCCam server.

Its also worth baring in mind that all development of NewCS has ended also.

For the average viewer, yes, they have the same features, but there is a lot more support available for the tinkerers due to the larger scene.. plus there are more bugs as you delve deeper into the TM500 that don't exist in the DM500, but these are not apparent to a standard user that sets the system up then waches it, not changing a setting...

Please don't get petty because you were wrong about the crossover thing :-rofl2
