Hi everyone,

I have an Eagle 500 and I've had it for 4 years. It has given me innumerable problems when turning my Staab motor due to overheating on a 1M dish.

I know that the problem was caused by the eagle because when someone lent me an original Dreambox 500 I had no issues.

I would like to buy a new box to replace the eagle. As you might expect, I want to avoid any motor related problems while having HD.

My question is, which box is the most reliable? DB500HD? DB800HD? WU+SOLO? OTHER?

Depends on your budget. I can personally recommend a Vu+ Uno, which has no issues driving motors but other Vu+ receivers are good too.
 
Either a DM800SE or VU+

Yes, the SE model has a much faster processor so you will notice it in use. The genuine models cost a LOT of money for what they are, so not good value. Clones are OK but you takes your risks.
 
What about the Amiko Alien 2 receiver looks good for the price and what you get.

For 149GBP you can get a GiGaBlue. It's got a Broadcom processor and proper E2 support. At that price why would anyone go for one of these (or a clone for that matter)?

Also for budget Broadcom/E2 receivers there's the ET4000 or XP1000 (even cheaper).

400MHz processor, not 300MHz. SE has HDMI socket and OLED display. Both only have 64MB flash and 256 RAM. Even the budget GiGaBlue at 149GBP has 128MB flash. Some images are already bigger than 64MB in size.
 
Right so I went to the local sat shop and he told me that he does not sell DM800 because they are giving people a lot of problems. He proceeded to show me 3 DM800 boxes which were left with him for repairs. He also said that the DM800's in circulation are all clones.

He suggested I go for WU (plus solo?) because they are very reliable (and he happens to stock them :-DOH2 )

Having said this, he said that if I wanted to go for dreambox I should go for DM500HD or DM8000 which are very reliable but to steer clear from the 800

So I am now confused again!
 
TBH I do not understand why sat-receiver should exert itself to turn antenna, of course it takes lots of power, especially if antenna is 1 meter or even bigger. That is why I prefer polar-mounted systems where receiver just give some protocol 1.2 signals to positioner, and positioner via actuator turns antenna. Everybody knows that DM receivers always had cooling issues and that even more apply to DM800.
DM8000 is very good (OK, maybe it was and it still overpriced, however it is not produced anymore), but it is more that 4 years old. Perhaps it is time to think about something at the same level or better. I, personally as a happy DM8000 user, also starting to look for some replacement. By now I see one real pretender to replace DM8k, it is new product with 2 fixed DVB-S2 tuners and 2 empty extension slots, but main improvement of this new receiver is processor, which is 1300 Mhz. Of course Linux and Enigma2 and other good stuff. Software development will come soon that is for sure. Product's name is "GigaBlue HD QUAD Hybrid- HDTV Linux Receiver". And price, less than 400 EUR is sexy enough :-clap

Yes there are a lot of 800 clones, but that doesn't mean all 800s are clones. Buy from a decent retailer that guarantees it is not a clone, and do a clone test on it once you receive it. That said you would be far better off going for one of the other receivers mentioned as they are much better value for money. Personally, for a single tuner Vu I would go for the Uno, not the solo, but the advantages of multiple tuners cannot be overstated. If you are on a tight budget though, go for the GiGaBlue or the XP1000.
 
Yes, and don't forget that you can upgrade the Vu+ Uno to a twin tuner at a later date.

You can do that right now using a Sundtek DVB-S USB tuner. Add a twin DTT USB tuner for terrestrial and you have a 4 tuner receiver.

The only plugin tuners at this time are terrestrial, not satellite.

You are perfectly right - at this time. For first time 2 existing sat tuners could be enough. Also external power supply, I am not sure is that good or bad, I like it internal. I can not find, but I've seen very qualitative review of this receiver, where author (seemed to be quiet professional) gave 4,5 points out of 5. His main point was fast performance of processor. On his opinion, after some time, when software will be developed and additional sat-tuners produced, this receiver could be state of the art (at least for some time). Dream Multimedia is so slow developing their Goliath _http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/goliath-more-just-digital-tv As usually nobody knows when it comes and how exactly that will look like.
 
Hi I have decided to either go for WU+solo at EUR265 or DM500HD at EUR395

Which one would you pick bearing in mind I want reliablity when turning the motorised dish which is 1m diameter and there will be some distance from the dish to the convertor (circa 3 storeys)?

Solo looks a little pricey. It can be had for less than 180GBP here (225 Eur). Don't bother with the DM500HD for that price.

I'd go for neither. Solo is an old model now with a slower processor. Get the Vu+ Uno.

Fair point

To get the prices you mention however, I'd have to buy it from ebay. What would happen is I'd be charged for software installation and whenever I have a problem the seller will tell me "these are not our models, we're not used to working with them bla bla bla", if it is his model he'll have no excuses and will provide me with warranty

Mind you I'm still undecided
 
World of Sat will install the software for free and will probably post to southern Europe. I've ordered a few times from them and they are very good.

Not recommended at all, but if you're into clones this website is fairly cheap. 120.00 gbp for a dm800se and 160.00 gbp for a VU+ Duo.

It's still worth spending the extra on genuine boxes.
