Dreambox beginners help

Hi,
I probably seem like an idiot but i do not know anything about dreambox, . i cam across this forum and read about dreambox. Can somebody please give me some answers which i trying findig on internet but m not sure about them.
I have a dish already installed outside my house
i have an internet connection
i do not have any subscription of Sly tv or any other tv connection
if i buy a dreambox will it be possible for me to view all the channels or do i have to have some sort of subscription with sly or some other company.
and is it easy to install dreambox, i have read about flashing the image and setting the network etc in KLONAS guide, out of which i understood a few things but not everything. so will it be possible for me to buy dreambox install/setup the dreambox and watch tv through internet.
can somebody please be kind enough to help and reply.........

Be prepared for several weeks of reading to understand just the very basics of dreamboxes. We've all started off this way.

Take a browse at the dreambox guides which might be of some interest.

A few things for you that took me ages to realise when I started out:

  1. A Dreambox is simply a satellite receiver powered by the Linux operating system. Because of the opensource nature of Linux it is easily manipulated and many people can add or remove parts as they require
  2. Connecting the Dreambox to the internet alone will not provide you with any extra channels that you are currently not paying for.
  3. Most Dreamboxes have a slot at the front to accept smart cards. These are the cards you might get when you subscribe to a satellite TV provider, such as Sly UK etc.
  4. If you subscribe to Sly and insert the card into the Dreambox it most likely will not work as the Dreambox alone does not know how to read the Sly card. To view it properly you will need to download and install some sort of software CAM. Examples of these are CCcam, MGCAMD, SCAM etc.
  5. Each softcam has its own way of being configured but basically you configure the CAM to connect to the Dreambox reader and read the details from the card.
  6. The confusion with newbies seems to arise from the softcams. Because the softcam in your Dreambox connects to the physical card reader to read the card it is possible to "detach" the softcam from the physical card, so to speak, and have a softcam running on an other Dreambox not directly connected to the card. The remote Dreambox does this by connecting via an ethernet connection to the box hosting the Sly card.
  7. Once this connection is in place and allowed, the remote Dreambox requests decryption information from its local CAM. The local CAM simply connects to the remote Dreambox, where the actual Sly card is, and "asks" it for the decrytption details. The hosting Dreambox sends the details back to the CAM and the channel open (this is a very basic description of what actually happens)
  8. With this in mind it is possible to have say one Drembox serving the Sly card and multipl Dreamboxes connected to it "sharing" the cards decryption details. This is where the term "Card Sharing" comes from.
  9. Usually Card Sharing takes place between people who know each other but it can happen other ways (which we don't speak about on this forum)

You will need to read up on which CAM is based for you but the most popular is CCcam. There are many tutorials about configuring CCcam but bare in mind you won't get any channels for free. Dreamboxes don't do that anymore since the move away from easily opened encryption methods.

The most important thing to remember when contemplating a Dreambox is this.

They are high end enthusiasts receivers, almost infinitely customisable, BUT you have be prepared to spend weeks if not months tinkering & learning how it works "under the bonnet" before you will get the best out of it.

If you expect to take it out of its cardboard box, set it up and get thousands of pay channels for free forget it - they dont work like that.


Also whilst we will give you general help no-one is going to hold your hand and talk you through every minor step in getting one set up. We have all gone through the nightmare first set up - and all new owners have to go through that pain as well :D

But i think i am a bigger idiot than you can think of. LOL.:confused:
I borrowed a dreambox of somebody who had it programmed by somebody a few weeks ago.
I brought it home and connected it to my computer with a null modem cable just to see what happens and if i can learn something. but correct me if m wrong.
A new unprogramed dreambox need to be connected to the tv and lan first or to the computer to setup dish, transponder scanning, and network /communication setup.:-confused:-confused
 
Its just a satellite receriver - you wont be able to do much with it unless you connect it to your satellite dish & the tv to begin with!

Sort the networking/computer access out later when you have a bit more experience of it.
 
I read that i can't get any channels until i do the cardsharing.
for example my friend had the dreambox installed by somebody who is professional and obviously he charged him good for that. but my friend gets almost all the paid channels without any card in the dreambox. he is not subscribed to anything.
So does that mean he is getting the channels through card-sharing i.e. his dreambox is catching channels from somebody else's dreambox by accessing somebody else's card (who obviously is subscribed to all those channels and has allowed other cards to be connected to his dreambox via satellite or Internet.)
am i right???????
so if i am that means if i get a dreambox and progra:eek::eek:m it( flash the image and that) and connect it to tv, dish and internet but still i will not get any channels untill i do the cardsharing with somebody else's card/dreambox who has all the channels.
Please explain.
 
packetstormer went to the time and effort to explain just this on the thread that you started. why don't you read the information that people supply. we try and help but its not easy when you simply ignore the efforts of members. what your friend has, most likely, is a connection to an illegal cardshare. please be welcome to do so also but be fully in the knowledge that when you do so your credit card/ip address/personal information now sits on an illegal server and law enforcement folks will just love you for it. i suggest you read further before you post any further comments on this forum

server,if that person gets busted then all the people on that server will get busted

i appreciate everybody's effort in taking time to read and explaining.
i read as much info as i cud but i did not understand a few things and what i understood i tried making sure i am right. so what's wrong with that, i said that i am an idiot bigger than u techy'O' guys can think of, i think u did not read that'O'. so please read next time before making comment.
 
if you read packetstormers advice it is very clear that you cannot receive channels simply by internet connecting a dreambox. you must have a valid subscription in the link to receive channels. in terms of scaring novices, i am just clearly pointing out the reasons why users should never use public shares. its very important that they are aware of what they are getting into. as far as i can see there is nothing untrue or threatening in my post. i am just saying it as it is.
