hi all,

I am running vlc on my PC so I can watch channels on my PC. It is working well when I am connecting directly to the router where my dm500 is connected. but when I want to stream over wireless LAN the video buffering become very slow and picture keeps on freezing.
is there any way to reduce the resolution of the video so I can see it smother without freezing

No there isn't. At least not before the dreambox pumps it over the LAN.

I find wireless streaming works no problem.

Are you running a 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network. If its a 802.11g network and your PC/laptop card supports this standard, there should be more than enough bandwidth available to stream video.

802.11b = 11 Mbit/s (Not really enough bandwidth)

802.11g = 54 Mbit/s (should be enough)

Does streaming work when the PC/laptop is near the router?
If so its a case of figuring out where best to put the router for optimal signal strength. Or buy a wireless network range extender.

Either your settings are not ok! or you've problems with your win.

Check the driver and network connections
If its ok, change it with other VLC "if possible" to test if the card is ok.
Then, the connections. 802.11b or g
then Win.

No need for any of that. He's already said it works fine over a LAN cable so there's no problem with anything but the connection speed.

Is it a laptop or a fixed computer? If it's fixed you could just use a HomePlug to connect to the router. Here I've got 2 WiFi networks, too far apart for a range extender so I bridge them with a HomePlug. It works fine and the data rate is much better than WiFi.

mhku, I think he just means streaming from the Dreambox to the PC over LAN.

yes that's what i mean. i dont want to stream over internet!

Q1. How many users are viewing the streams?

If there are more than one user you may want to check if the Wireless Router supports Multicast. If your router is from Cisco than you may want to upgrade the router to new IOS which supports multicasting.

1. Video Stream from DreamBox is MPEG4 and MPEG4 can run smoothly 25fps and 44khz Audio in 5Mbit Bandwidth.

2. 802.11B easily supports 2 to 3 concurrent users and should work perfectly with single user.

3. Another thing to check is of your LAN Switch is full duplex and NOT HUB Switch. Else the Video will not show.

4. Use Cisco switch (Costly) or (Free) opensource router that supports Multicasting from _http://www.vyatta.com/

Typical throughput on an 802.11B network is only 4-5 MBps, nowhere near the 11MBps net. So even in perfect conditions, it would be a struggle to transmit a 5MBps stream over the available bandwidth.

The issue here is streaming over wireless, there is no such thing as "full duplex" wifi.
