Dsr 7800

Hi - I'm an absolute greenhorn who is considering entering the seemingly complex world of satelite TV.

At the moment I am just a simple Sky+ user and I've been scouring websites to try and find out what I can about the subject. I've come across a receiver called Bigsat DSR 7800 which seems to have a good spec! Does anyone know this receiver as I would like advice as to its suitablity for a newcomer like myself.

I am planning to use a motorised dish...any advice on this would also be welcomed.

Well I think the flood of responses should be answering your questions. Choose something that someone has either heard of or used and posted about on the forum. What makes you think this is a good spec, have you made a comparison with something else?

As a pensioner I have to be cautious when spending money on 'luxuries' so, if you're not impressed by the above spec, can you make any recommendations. All those I see on this site seem to be too expensive for me!

If you cannot afford an HD stb then it does not seem bad for a basic SD unit, but why the conax embedded cam what do you want to do with that?
The 2 CI slots will give you plenty of options for dragon t/rex or Diablo cam all of which are expensive when you will also need to buy the CAS III+ programmer unit but you will still need to buy a motorised dish and lnb etc. It interestingly has C band option however that is not much use in the UK.
It really all depends what you are wanting/expecting out of it that determines whether it is 'worthwhile'
Everything adds up and as there is not a great deal 'open' now the amount of money thrown at a hobby can mean that a subscription to what you want becomes more and more affordable

I have to start somewhere and I want to spend the minimum but, obviously, I want to be able to receive as many English speaking channels as I can.
Perhaps the DRS 7800 was not meant for the UK market if it has C-band option.....but can it be used here and what channels would I be able to receive?

Conax is an encryption system, used quite a bit on 0.8 West
You say you want English programming, but generally you already have that with sky. Other providers on different satellites tend to have American and English films but often they are dubbed, sometimes they have dual language tracks but as I do not watch them I cannot advise you, you have to really say what it is you want to watch and folks can then help you with suggestions. There are I think now 6 to 7 thousand channels available in the skies above us but although some are FTA any decent stuff requires a subscription so until we know what your required genre is......

Perhaps it was not, but if it is a satellite receiver there is nothing to stop it being used here as long as it is 220V,

That depends upon what satellite you point it at there are theoretically these to choose from in the UK. Then you can look at lyngsat.com to see what channels are on each satellite
