Hi guys...
I need a clear definition of the terms "Freeview" and "free to air" the reason being I bought a sky yellow house card off ebay that promised all the sky freeview chanells as well as E4....the card had been on sale before and the seller pulled it to ensure it was working...re posted and said the above was available...but when the card arrived it didn't work..can get all the BBC's but not ITV's or Ch4 & 5....I emailed the seller and they said the card was working...I've left it cooking now for over 48hrs in 2 digi boxes but it keeps giving this message when I try to receive ITV "you need to upgrade your subscription to recieve this program" I want to contact ebay and see what my next course of action is..
cheers
gandalf..

You might want to ring sky, explain your situation, and possibly they might re-activate your card.
Matt

Can we have the link to the auction so we can see the exact description?

Not a good idea monkeyhead, Sky still think the original owner has this card (unless you were trying to get him/her into trouble).

FTA means Free To Air – as in not encrypted and so no card needed.

FTV means Free To View, encrypted, card needed.

A FTA card is a con, a FTV card is also know as the Freesat card and should get you Ch4/5, ITV etc.

Hi polomint...
Thanks for the quick reply....I just wanted the definition to show the seller before I contact ebay...
I copied and pasted the description.....
Cheers
gandalf

This is a Sky yellow house card that receives the Freeview channels. Previously listed but I removed the listing to check the card actually works, and it does receive loads of channels including E4. UK postage and packing will cost 50p. Thanks for looking.

including E4

This could be the key E4 is not Free-to-air on Sky it is Free-to-view on a cancelled subscription or FreeSat card.

If it worked for the seller it should work for you.

Ignore the BBC channels anyone can view them card or not.

Is E4 FTV satellite? I though that was only on DTT? It was a while ago I last checked.

If it isn't then it's even more against the seller.

You're absolutely correct - sorry.

I think it's part of the lowest package.

Yup E4's Family Pack and above.

A FTV card can ONLY give you ITV1 ITV2 C4 and C5. Everything else is fta (BBC et al) or subscription.

E4 is not FTA or FTV on Satellite.

But if you have a Yellow house Sub card , leave the card in the box , and turn to ITV1 (Channel 103) , and leave it overnight and DO NOT Change the channel. ITV1 , CH4 and CH5 will all of a sudden appear , But E4 and E4+1 will not appear , the are part of the Basic package as a sweetner for Sly , for when the went Free-To-Air on Freeview Digital Terrestrial and NOT Digital Satellite. Hope you did not pay much for it , but would inform Ebay as you are supposedly not allowed to Sell any Sly Cards on there. Had a few auctions myself cancelled. If you get stuck PM Me.

Hope this helps

AlexDN32 :-DOH!

Sorry , also ITV2 will appear.

Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV's will come back.
If the message says 'Call the broadcaster to upgrade your subscription to receive this channel' then the card is active.
If the message says 'this card is not authorized' then you're out of luck and have bought a dud.
You say you get the first message so leave the card in the box and all will be ok.
Alexdn32 is quite correct in his advice.
regards
D.

of course there's further confusion since "freeview" (terrestial DVB) is not the same as FTA/FTV on satellite. FTV would be the closest thing however... so if advertising all Freeview channels, the closest equivalent package is your FTV, although there are some differences with the exact chanel listings! a very good comparison is shown here:
_http://www.vowles-home.demon.co.uk/Sat/SkyFTA.htm
it you're been pedantic you can't get "freeview" across satellite - or the exact package anyway....
sorry to confuse you more..... cts
