I am trying to update the software on a echostar 2110civa, by serial cable from a pc, I am okay up until the echo download manager bit and then I am cluless, com port ? baud rate?, I am assuming that the com port refers to where its connected to on the pc.

I have previously tried all this with a serial port to usb cable, which I was advised may not work, so I ordered a bog standard serial to serial cable which should be coming today.

The main problem is I cant tell whether anything is being transferred to the reciever or not.

Any help would be gratefully received (no pun intended)

Thanks
Ian

Default baud rate is 9600. Com port of course depends on your PC's comport. Normally 1 unless you have more on your PC.

Use the Download tab in the Manager to upload files to your box. Confusing I know.

Don't know your receiver, but it should show Download or similar on the front panel when you have correctly connected to it and switched the box from standby to on and are ready to upload your file.

Packet transfer will begin. Don't interrupt the process or you will have a dead receiver.

Has it just stopped after a fixed time? Try again and note the time. If it's the same, your flash may have encountered a corrupted block in the eeprom.

Does your receiver still work after powering up again?

We cross-posted. Seems like you are trying to upload the wrong software. Are you sure you have the right one?

Hmm that would be a pretty stupid thing to do, but I will check,

And yes the reciever does power up afterwards, strangely enough

Not really sure what you mean Ian. Has it comletely loaded the packets (modules bar full) and stopped without rebooting the receiver?

Well if it hasn't even started downloading, could be a problem with your serial connection from PC to STB. Is the receiver showing 'Download' on the front panel?

1. Download the echostar software from the Echostar site

2. Open file with winzip

3. Select aformentioned file on download manager, on download panel

4. Turn on receiver and get loads of error messages on pc while files are transferring on screen, but nothing happenig on receiver.

5. Give up

P,s What the **** are bin files and why cant I do anything with them.

Sorry, but this Post seems a bit abstract ...... I sense it must be linked in some way to something previously Posted: But where? :confused

I think the clue is in his profile, Echostar DSB2110via2ci , and I assume he's trying to update the firmware.
At a guess I'd say the problem could lie in the connection he's using on his PC, I think the Echostars are updated using a serial cable and if you're using a USB to Serial adapter it could cause problems, although without more information I'm stumped.

A bin file is a binary file. You dont need to do anything with a bin apart from load it onto the receiver.

Are you using a usb to serial adapter? These are flaky at the best of times - esppecially if the usb port has a com port setting that isnt recognised by the loader software.

To be fair, it was only me that was confused - and that was 'cos I was trying to update SWMBO's PC, cook a full Liver & Onions Dinner and Post here at the same time.

Multi-skilled I am not!
