EPG problems...... with Icecrypt S4000

Hi all,

I am a complete newcomer to the Satellite world, finally taking the plunge to watch WC football in HD..... and tennis for the mrs.
So everything is new for me although I have had a subscription to WotSat for some time.
I live in warrington and got a Sky Raven Zone2 dish with the thought of adding 13deg. and 19.2deg. at some future time. LNB is twin Inverto Black ultra.
I think I'm pointing at 28.2/28.5deg because I can see BBC HD and ITV HD both of which give 85% quality and look great. I used Dishpointer.com to point it at my neighbours window across the road.
I can see channels on Eurobird [V] and [H] and on Astra [V] (22,000 and 27500) and [H] (22,000 and 27500).

The problem is that this Icecrypt S4000 has a 7 day EPG but I can only see channel info. for what is on the Program guide on screen. Move down a bit to other channels and everything says "No information" until I click/select that channel and then info is displayed for those channels that are now visible in the Program guide menu onscreen - but there is still no information about these channels more than 2 hours into the future, never mind 7 days.

Am I missing something obvious? Any suggestions appreciated.

I have had a Humax 9200T freeview recorder for years and its been brilliant. This Icecrypt has crashed more times in a few days than the Humax in 5 years. The Icecrypt crashes when I'm just trying to sort the order of channels. I've reset it to the factory default and rescanned all the channels again but still no EPG.
 
Hello mrwarby and welcome to the forum.

The problem is because the Icecrypt isn't a certified Freesat receiver. The 7 day EPG is transmitted in a separate data stream and only Freesat receivers can access and use this. What you are seeing is the the Now-and-Next information that is broadcast as part of each channel. Some European channels (German I think) send seven day information with each channel and this is why the Icecrypt has the space for 7 days - but this is no use in the UK.

I don't know very much about the Icecrypt (make that next to zero!) but some Linux receivers have add-ons that enable to the box to access 7 day information across the Internet on sites such as the Radio Times. Possibly there's an add-on for the Icecrypt somewhere?

The What Satellite review praises the 7 day EPG but fails to mention that you have to 'modify' anything for it to work here in the UK.
My plan was to get the next Humax Freesat when it comes out and then I could play with the Icecrypt with other satellites.
I was hoping it would work well with its own firmware without having to change the firmware (updates are OK) or use plug-ins.
Guess it's more searching but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Which issue had the review? I'll try to dig it out and reread it when I get home.

Your future plan sounds right to me. I have the current offering from Humax for Freesat (with built-in hard disc) and it's very good. I have quibbles with some of its "quirks" but nothing I can't live with.
 
The issue of What Satellite was #285, March but here is a link to the exact same review online.
Page 2 also shows the EPG for German channels.
I think there are a few other users who would like to see some EPG for this box.
I'm happy for now to see football, tennis and some good music pictures from Glastonbury, but I'm pretty sure I will swap to the next Humax box with a bigger hard drive.
I'll then put the Icecrypt in the bedroom...

Yes, you'd think they would have said specifically that it's not a Freesat receiver when they talk about the EPG. It's a bit misleading in my opinion.
