:) Hi to you all! :)

New to this game and require some help on purchasing a receiver.

I'm looking at the Dreambox 800 HD PVR. At dreamsatbox.com, they are knocking them out @ £190 which is almost definitely a clone, however from what I have read through this and different forums this isn't necessarily a bad thing......mostly good reports.

Has anyone dealt with dreamsatbox, and if so what was the service like and aftersales help?
I have come across a couple of reports of some clones fitted with cheap tuners which led to problems. These were overcome by fitting the Alps L3 tuner. I have asked dreamsatbox if the Alps is fitted......awaiting reply!

Are there any other major issues I should be aware of?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well for starters it is in my opinion misleading to describe it as a PVR which implies there is a hard drive of some description fitted which of course there is not. It has the ability to record with additions is about as far as I would go.

I would be more concerned about the spelling within their website and the (lack of) guarantees.

I've checked that link and the company is registered in China.
There is no privacy policy!
They do offer a years warranty, albeit returning the receiver is £30+
I've also looked @ dvbseller.com similar price, also based in China and had good reports on forums.
 
With the clone DM800 you will need to use a patched image i.e and image that has been modified to work with the version of your clone.
 
Be warned the reliabliity on some DM clones is questionable. You may be lucky and a get a good one.

There are also issues with updating the firmware as like mentioned before you have to use modified firmware dependent on the sim version installed on the box.

In all honesty my friend if you want a HD box have a look at the VU+ Solo or VU+ Duo.

They may be a bit more expensive, but you can buy them from a UK retailer and be covered by British trading standards should anything go wrong.

The VU+ boxes are up and coming with a lot of image teams jumping on board to write images for them. The people i have spoke to who have one say nothing but praise for them.

These boxes do have the potential to be Dreambox killers which should send the message to Dream Multimedia that we are sick of paying the over inflated prices for their boxes, no matter how good they are.

I have been looking at the TM800 receivers but from what I have read the software leaves a lot to be desired... Buggy as hell and not complete, I'd probably still give one a go but wouldn't recommend it to anyone else until I had.

I think nanochickin is right, VU+ seem to have the best linux boxes at the moment... A little more pricey than the others. When I upgrade to HD VU+ will probably be the way to go... and the solo boxes are quite nicely priced ATM.
 
I've got a Vu+ and it's the dogs. Well worth a look.

I've seen a good few clone 800's need an inline amp to stop the HD channels glitching. Personally I wouldn't recommend a clone, too much of a chance to take if you end up with a good one or not.
 
I've also been looking at the IPBox range aswell. To be honest i'm getting board with my 7020 Dreamboxes and want something new to play with. Not going to go near a Technomate again. The last few have put me off for life, even though i did manage to get them running fairly well in the end.

HD doesn't interest me greatly so as daft as it may sound even the old DM7025+ is still a contender as it ticks all the right boxes for me.

If you want a cheap HD Linux box your can always look at the Openbox S9.

Cheap and cheerful at under £100. The will work with CS using a built in CCCam program, although they do not have ftp or a web interface. N.B They can only be used as a client CS box not a server.
