Eric Sykes RIP

Sad news indeed. Yes, he initiated some great comedy script-writing partnerships with Spike Milligan in the 50's. Galton and Simpson were two that came on board.

He was deaf and partly blind in later years, but still remained active.

R.I.P Eric.
 
Yes, a most remarkable actor with a unique style which I always found very much to my taste.

Last seen I think in one of the Harry Potter films. A wonderful innings for a great man.

A great shame, one of the true comic geniuses though he always seemed overshadowed by others.

Yes, Paul he was in 'Goblet of Fire' and bumped off in the first 15 minutes. He has a lovely cameo in 'Son of Rambow', a brilliant British movie from a little while back.

Yes very sad new I fondly remember his BBC program Sykes and A featuring Hattie Jaques, but 89 is a very good innings for anyone

I still remember some of the episodes in Sykes, as well as his short films. Does anyone remember the episode with Peter Sellers as the convict?
Eric Sykes was always funny, without having to resort to abusive comedy, always polite, no matter how many times he was interviewed, and was well regarded by all his peers, including Tommy Cooper, Peter Sellers, Hattie Jacques, the list is endless.
Hopefully, for once, British television will show respect and show a lot of his classic comedy shows/films, they will certainly show up some of the rubbish produced now.
 
Funny til the end -hope he makes spike milligan laugh now he's up there with him. Great genuine guy.
 
A great story told on Northwest Tonight by Tony Livesy (Eric was a Northern lad after all).

Eric was on a visit to Africa somewhere and he had been hit by a dose of diarrhoea. He was being shown a village and when he was told that they built the walls using dung he said that he wished they had told him the previous day and he could have built them a new town Hall!

Brilliant.
 
I don't watch British television but has any channel done a celebration of Eric Sykes comedy classics?
 
Dont think so yet.... to busy doing shite comedy on BBC3

For somebody that wrote/starred in primetime comedies on the channel for well over a decade hasn't been given one evening for a final farewell is somewhat shocking
 
Seems typical, of the BBC, and British television, forget about the comedy greats and churn out the usual rubbish.
I wonder if the BBC even have any of Sykes classic comedies, or have they lost them all?
It would be nice if young kids could see how good the comedy shows were back then, intelligent, gentle humour, that got you laughing out loud.
I can't remember when I last saw them, probably early 70's, but I still remember a couple of episodes, and I'll never forget The Plank, co-starring Tommy Cooper, and a host of real British comedy stars.

I certainly agree - but I also recall that on occasion people have left "in the event of" requests to the effect of not wanting any special treatment or quasi-memorial: But I know not if Eric did such a thing.
