Nope, it's not May already but just did a quick forum search and surprisingly saw threads for previous years (so I guess there's a few others interested in this? :p)

I have to admit I'm quite a fan of this contest, it was one reason why I wanted to get a motorised system so I could delve into song selections taking place around Europe across the variety of satellites. Not quite sure what it is but I've always been interested and in some cases fascinated by the diverse mix of music styles and how they differ country to country.

Whilst the actual competition itself runs in May, to me that's the very climax of the contest. The real fun is tuning into national final's from the 40 or so countries participating. Some of them have very different methods of selecting their entry, be it a big local artist simply presenting their internally selected song, an X Factor style show where songs are knocked out in a series of rounds or just a bog standard show of 6 or so songs with the public selecting the winner by phone voting.

I saw we have threads relating to World Cup & Euro 2016 football qualifers so I thought, why can't the same apply for Eurovision? :p It's also quite a bonus hearing the selected songs in advance (before the bookies do at least) and in doing so, I've had quite a few flutters and wins.

The first country to select their entry is Albania - the first semi final was last night with the second tonight. The final takes place tomorrow which is when we'll find out what their entry is. The show is on TVSH Sat at 16.0E
 
Australia have been invited back this year :D Their participation last year as a "one off" was such a success they are back.

However if they win they have to host the show in Europe partnering with the relevant national broadcaster.
 
Should be re-titled "Globovision Dirge Contest" :rolleyes:
 
Would be interesting if they did win, would the BBC want to host it in the midst of them making so many cuts? :D

This year, there's one major part of the show that has been removed which may disappoint a few enthusiasts and that's the live satellite voting link ups :( This year to save time and cut down the show (lasted 3hr 50min last year) they are flying out spokespersons to Stockholm and the results will be read out in the arena itself. Quite an annoyance as I was looking forward to tuning into the voting feeds!

We will never win it again - no-one likes us these days, and the quality of the songs we enter is just awful.

Shame the satellite voting has gone - its half the fun when things go wrong during the voting linkups :D

BISS encrypted. There will be a way, but you won't find it here. It'll probably be gone anyway before someone does.
 
Just seen official documentation that this year's Eurovision feeds on 7E/10E will be BISS-1 encrypted.

This year they will have a third feed, to be broadcast in NS3 (no idea what it is personally)


I understand last year they had complaints from broadcasters about the relatively weak signal. The BBC even had break up at one point, as did many of the voting feeds. My theory is that they have most likely been forced to bump up the signal this year and in doing so, don't want prying eyes coming across the feeds in the clear hence the need to encrypt.
 
TVR has a significant amount of debt that would normally see a company that size become bankrupt, but as a public body it can't be declared bankrupt under Romanian law. Don't be surprised if their programming on 16E suddenly stops at some point if they haven't be paying Eutelsat either.
