Eurovision 2023 comes to the UK

Tomorrow kicks off Eurovision week & for the first time since the UK won way back in 1997, the UK is hosting the competition. Yes I know technically we didnt win last year but Im not going to let that fact get in the way of a good excuse to post lots of my favourite Eurovision tracks for the next week! Sadly the Ukraine couldnt host this year after their runaway win last year so I really hope Liverpool makes Ukraine proud.


So to start with we go back in time to 1997 with Katrina & the Waves & Love Shine a Light

Eurovision 2009 was held in Moscow & Norway wins. Which makes a change from their more usual score of "nul points" Alexander Rybak & Fairytale

Eurovision 2011 - we are in Dusseldorf. A new country wins - Azerbaijan Ell & Nikki with Running Scared

Many of you youngsters weren't even born when this one was on!. Star date 1975 and we are in Stockholm. Competing for the UK were The Shadows - Let Me Be The One (complete with slightly wonky video tape!)

2004 & we are in Istanbul - Ukraine wins with leather clad Ruslana & Wild Dances

Star date 1981. Eurovision is in Dublin & the UK are the winners (Hooray!) with Bucks Fizz & Making Your Mind Up

Eurovision 2015 we are in Germany & something a bit different in the staging for the Swedish entry - stick men! Things have certainly moved on with the staging in the last 40 years - look at Bucks Fizz compared to this one

Eurovision 2022 & we are in Turin. No one else has a chance - public support for Ukraine after the Russkie invasion & war brings a landslide win for Ukraine. However Sam Ryder - Space Man is a decent enough tune & in different circumstances would have won. And for 2023 the UK proudly honours Ukraine hosting the contest on their behalf

Back to Stockholm in 1975. The Netherlands pips the Shadows (boooo!) Teach In - Ding A Dong

Eurovision 1982 & after the Bucks Fizz victory we are in Harrogate. The UK entry is Bardo - One Step Further & Sally Ann Triplett famously flashes her knickers to a couple of hundred million viewers

Quite an early entry in the cannon from the UK. Pear Carr and Teddy Johnson with Sing Little Birdie from 1959. An early memory for me as well. They managed to finish second.

Eurovision 23006 - Athens is hosting & Finland monster rock wins the contest

Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah is my all time favourite EV track - I said it would win as soon as I heard it in the semis.

Back to 1978 & we are in Paris for the next entry. A very young Cheryl Baker (better known for Bucks Fizz of course) appears in a group called Coco with Bad Old Days. Its fairly unsuccessful finishishing 11th - our worst ever placing at the time & it would remain our worst score for nearly 10 years! (CB is second from the right wearing the weird space chick cape)
