Hi all, not sure if I'm posting in the right section but I've been asked a question from a friend of mine.

Basically his brother has moved in round the corner and is unable to afford broadband at the mo. The house is about 300mtrs away and has a pretty good line of sight.

Is there any way to extend his broadband to him?

Not easily, cheaply and legally, I shouldn't think.

A domestic WiFi repeater such as I use really only illuminates the darker recesses of the house, though I've noticed on my WiFi Analyser App that on rare occasions Routers from up to eighty or so metres can be seen. A kind of WiFi Dxing, I suppose!

One would assume that one has returned to the house after a good afternoon session in the local ( now´t wrong with that ) , but " Is there any way to extend his broadband to him? "
Theoretically not possible, on account it´s his to start with!
However, there are some high powered wifi extenders available which will allow a transmission of such a distance. BUT it is totally dependant on external interference from other systems,
you may strike lucky!
 
Maybe one of his new neighbors would be kind enough to set him up as a user.
In Israel people are encouraged to give away 10% of their internet subscription for free so that there would be internet everywhere on the go.
 
I recall that, a few years ago now, it was mooted that Broadband should become an entirely free service.

Of course, it never happened!
 
I can think of other priorities for that process ...........
 
It can be done using highly directional aerials. Unfortunately I have no personal experience of how to do it.

In the early days of ADSL one of our radio club members shared his broadband with another member some mile or two distant. Similarly another club member sent broadband over to Hilbre Island from West Kirby, again a couple of miles.
 
Our Fixed Wireless Access system uses 5GHz comms with directional aerials that perhaps have a
line-of-sight range of 2km.

But it's all Licensed .....

The thing is, some of you " young bucks " have no idea, radio telecommunications is one field, satellite communications is another. Have to admit this one is yours, sats ´n ´stuff. I know a tad about the other.
Anyway, for a laugh........
 
Its possible yes - have a look at "cantenna" on google - 300m should be well within range of a directional beam.

I have used "C" band dishes to provide internet service to a friend, this was 2 "C" band dishes with modified feed horns at about 10 miles, it worked great.

Sorry, this was hill top to hill top.

Also 18 inch "kU" band dishes with modified LNB mounts have been used, but the signals are 2.5 or 5 GHz, so a bigger antenna is better.

Now using a can antenna is OK for short distances, but the coax needed to extend the antenna counteracts the gain of the antenna, in fact it causes more signal loss then gain. (2.5 GHz in a coax is stretching it)

What I have done is to use a USB WIFI device, I use one that has a 2 watt output* and an external antenna connection, this way it can be mounted right at the antenna with a very short coax, (the shorter the better) remember this is a two way street, you may be able to receive the WIFI but can you get back to the WIFI router or access point?

The Alfa device can be located in a water tight box right at the antenna, or inside the feed horn where the LNB use to be.

It is a USB device so I use an active USB extension cable to run it directly to the computer, using several of them (up to 5) you can locate the antenna outside where it will work much better and have the computer inside.

I also have used USB to CAT6 adapters with POE over CAT cable, but the draw back to that is that your limited to 10 mbps on the interface, this however has been proven to run out to 500 feet from the PC to the USB WIFI device.

Another approach was to use a powered 2 port USB hub at the Alfa WIFI device, this way you get all the DC power you need to run it, the draw back was that AC power had to be run out to the antenna location.

Cheaper to invert an offest dish.
 
Well yes maybe, but some dish's designed for 12 GHz do not work as well as one designed for 3.5 to 4.5 GHz. (in my field testing)

However most do not have access to a "C" band dish, and they are a bit too large to mount up off the roof.

So if you can find a prime focus dish lets say around 600 mm in diameter (24 inches) then you may have something to work with, you may have to make a suitable holder and enclosure for the WIFI antenna/adapter but it would work.
 
10 miles (16kms for the non colonials since Brexit is happening), should be no issue hill to hill.
