So, I finally got around to opening a Facebook account a couple of years ago.

Since then, I've spent more time trying to stop it presenting stuff I don't want and generally circumventing most of it's "helpful" features.

Finally I have realised that, for me, it's benefits are extremely limited and I've decided to abandon the venture entirely and retrieve a chunk of my life.

What do others think of Facebook? Friend (!), or Foe? Love it, or hate it?

I only glance at it a couple of times a week but I like it as it keeps me in touch and up to date with friends from the past that are now dotted around the globe (being an ex-international school student), many of whom I had lost contact with before Facebook.

Not a fan of it myself, so many people say it connects you socially, then in a physical social situation people are just gawking at their phones and tablets just waiting for that notification noise to say someone liked their comment or the picture of the food they just posted, very anti-social indeed...

It's like they've been brainwashed and have lost all sense of identity, almost like they've been assimilated into the faceborg...

@2CV, yes, my wife refers to it as Antisocial Media and is resolute in not getting involved. She is a wise woman.

I think it serves a purpose for people in specific circumstances, whilst I accept that it can feel like an infringement of privacy to some, it is a lifeline to others. I certainly feel that twitter is a step too far and definitely not up my street.

Being on my own here, it helps me share things with relatives and friends in the UK and abroad who don't want to have contact via email. However, I seem to be constantly turning off 'helpful' features. I wouldn't touch Twitter with a barge pole....

That'll be why you've used more than 140 characters then! ;)

I use the excellent FBPurity Browser Extension, but even that struggles to cope and has, by necessity, become somewhat unwieldy itself.

In my case Facebook allows me to keep in touch with friends and family in different countries and pursue differing interests such as 2cvs and camping. Confusions do arise, such as my wife's Boxer Friends Spain group, dedicated to rescuing abandoned boxers here and re-homing them mainly in the UK. These boxers are the four-legged canine type, but Facebook and Google offer us information on boxing clubs and competitions, not my style at all!

I quite enjoy Facebook. I am a member of numerous groups of things I find of interest and it keeps me in touch with friends who I knew at school and those who I got to know in later life. In all, I like it!

Is there an "I detest Sky TV" group, Tony? :D

I log in to my Facebook account maybe once a year. Might as well delete it.
Twitter on the other hand I do enjoy. I use it mostly as a news feed, lurking. Once in a while after commenting, if sensible enough, you do get replies from world politicians and Nobel laureates. The platform may suck but the network of engaged people makes it worthwhile. I stayed away from Twitter as long as possible because I was afraid it might be addictive. It is. At least for me. I waste far too much time on it.

They do indeed; I have a friend who enjoys the meatball like comestible known as a faggot who can't understand some of the comments he receives from those across the pond! :-rofl2

I use it and find it useful for keeping in touch with my young relatives and many non UK friends and relatives. Using FBP does help keep things controlled, plus I put my contacts in groups, so I see say the posts from friends of friends, only if I look in that group.

Also it has put me intouch with some old friends with whom I'd lost contact.

No idea on that one, Tivu! There might be :)

Right, the deed is done.

Dispensed with all my Groups and Interests a couple of days ago.

Posted up an advisory message on my Timeline.

Bit of chat with Friends.

Pushed the DELETE button last night.

Cathartic!

Yep, I do use it. Mainly to stalk on others rather than do anything else. I am a part of a few groups there, which I find a good time waster spender.

You do know you can't delete your account completely, whatever you have posted in the past will be stored on multiple servers around the world, the information will just be inaccessible to you from now on.

Even after you have removed as much as you can there's this

Make sure to avoid logging into your Facebook account for 14 days. If you login during this two week period, your account will be restored.

According to Facebook's Data Use Policy, it takes about one month to delete your account, but some information may remain in backup copies for up to 90 days on Facebook's end.
