"Standby" on a Sky box only turns off the sound & vision circuits so programme resumption when you hit the power button is instantaneous.
Full power off takes bloody ages to start up. Even if you disconnect the hard drive it STILL takes bloody ages to be ready to go from power off - our bedroom Sky HD+ box (a freebie from family) has the hdd disconnected to save electricity as there is no card with it.
If Freesat have been stupid enough to remove standby thats a retrograde step - no one will buy their gear if it takes 5 minutes or more for the box to be ready to go every time you turn it on
