I'm seeking advice on what to buy & how to make it work for freesat
My Location
Shropshire
Hi, i'm new to all this but would like to buy a dish to use for freesat,
anyone got any advice on what to get?

Also what does 28.2E mean for Astra, most of the dishes around me if I look out the window seem to point roughly east, which isn't a bearing of 28.2 degrees?

Any help much appreciated.
 
Just get a Zone 1 Sky Dish if all you want is Freesat.

You can get them with an LNB and full Installation Kit for aruond twenty notes from eBay.

The Satellite position is "degrees East of South" so where it actually is depends upon where you are.

Whack your Lat/Long into this _http://www.satsig.net/ssazelm.htm and it'll tell you where to point your Dish.
 
Hi,

I'm a new member trying to work out how to get freesat. If i buy a dish an LNB some cable and a freesat box and point the satellite dish at astra 28.2 E is that gonna work?

What does 28.2 E mean anyway, when i look out of my house window, most of the neighbours dishes seem to point East...

Any help much appreciated
 
Moved your post to a new thread merged to the other started as it was attached to an active thread not relevant.

Yes, dish, LNB, cable and freesat box installed to the Astra2 satellites will get you up and running.

28.2e is just that being 28 degrees East of the greenwich meridian.
 
so where should i find the greenwich meridian...?
 
Ok, great, so if I point my dish 28.2 degrees east of south, ie 151.8 degrees compass, then I'm going to find the Astra satellite?

All seems confusing to me, should I be calling an installer?

Careful alignment would be required to get a lock on the satellite. Plenty info on the forum :)

But it isn't 151.2 degrees compass.

Many people with no prior knowledge have installed a Satellite dish from scratch, so there's no reason why you wouldn't succeed.

It is one of those seemingly mysterious tasks which looks dead easy in retrospect!
 
ah, I just moved my compass away from my mobile phone...

maybe I'll have a go after all...

Ok, I followed your link, great site thanks, found the actual degrees and it's definately not 151. anything...

Don't worry about it!

You'll only be able to put the dish up roughly anyway - trial and error after that, to get accurate alignment :)

OK...

So i bought a free to air fortec star 4200, a triax 55cm elliptical dish, a Labgear sat finder and fitted the dish to the wall.

It's all cabled up and I've followed the instructions on the sat finder to get the best signal strength as far as possible.

I think I may've read about this problem before somewhere else on your forum, but can't find the thread. I'm only getting 45% signal strength on the box & 5% signal quality. Any ideas?

Yes. Carry on .............

You generally get a substantial apparent Strength reading just by virtue of having an LNB connected. Prove it by either pointing the Dish at the ground or by detaching the LNB from the Dish!

5% Quality also suggests you aren't anywhere near being aligned to a Satellite position.

Assuming that all else is correct with the system ie Connected up, powered up and not faulty, it's just a matter of plodding on incrementally and patiently.

Does the Dish face look more or less vertical? It should. If it is pointing noticeably up or down then you are way out.

Have you checked that the 28E Transponder you are attempting to receive is actually "live"? Pre-stored lists are often wrong. Check by reference to flysat

Which channel have you got your receiver tuned to?
Check here for a list of FTA channels that you can use:

Check the connections between the LNB and receiver, if these are correctly fitted you will need to gently move your dish to get the strongest signal quality reading you can.
Do this by tuning your receiver to a FTA channel, probably one of the BBC channels, them move your dish until you get a picture.
Have you got the LNB skewed to the correct position?
Must type faster, beaten to it again !!!!!!!!
