Freesat in Gran Canaria?

Hi - first-time poster here.

We have a holiday apartment in Gran Canaria and with the aerial feed supplied by the block we can only get four very boring analogue Spanish channels, so we were wondering if we could get Freesat over there. Hence a couple of questions.

1. Satellite Footprint - does the 2D include the Canary Islands? If not, do any other satellites carry the same programming?

2. How do I work out the relative position (specifically elevation) of the Astra birds from my location in Gran Canaria? I suspect I might have a problem with the lateral location as the terrace where I would have to place the dish faces due west (well, probably WSW), and I suspect that unless the satellite is very high in the sky I won't be able to point far enough east to see it. The exact location of the apartment according to Google Earth is 27deg 49min 06.31sec N, 15deg 44min, 57.69sec W.

Quick note to add that I have done a search before posting and found either old or unrelated answers. Also, as it's an apartment I could only fit a small (say max 0.5m) dish.

Nearest town is Mogan - we're on the south-west corner of the island.

Both very nice, as I recall. Got side swiped by a Bus on the road between the two. Nasty.

Anyway, you won't get 2D without a far,far, far bigger dish than 0.5m: In fact, I doubt you'd get anything from 28.2/28.5E at all.

Oh, sorry - Puerto Mogan. To be precise, next door in Taurito. The road to Mogan is not a road to get side swiped on - it's good to hear you stayed on the road.

I believe the apartment block has a 1.5m dish that might be feeding the socket in the apartment that's labelled 'Sat'! However I have no idea what satellite it's pointing at, nor what receiver I'd need.

I guess I need to ask around the next time I'm out there.

Hi Tony,

You will require a dish of approx 2.4M to 3.1M for reception of 'freesat/Astra2d' programming. Chance of 2d Horz transponders, no vertical 2d and no Eurobird S1 whilst aligned to 2d. Varies between the islands but this is how it behaves in Lanza. Possibly an non starter.
 
But at least you may have a potential Tenant or three for a Holiday Let, if that's your bag ........not been to GC for ages and it's on our list ........ ;)

As previously mentioned 2D would be out for you. I would suggest an 80cm dish pointing to 7 degrees west (Nilesat) as there are many reasonably good free channels in English on that satellite. Good luck and I will PM you too as I need a break from this rock.

Hi, yes I agree with trigger. Good selection of telly on Nilesat. If you are going to try and install yourself, look out for the local dishes most of which are on astra 1 (I would guess your 1.5m is pointing that way). Then if you take them as pointing to 12 o´clock Nilesat is about 10 past and a little higher in the sky. Are you in the recently painted brick red coloured block?

Indeed - Balcon De Taurito.

We bought it over 4 years ago in the November and then, with no warning on the following April we were told "No - is closed. Has mucho damp. We must fix. Talk to your Abogado". Finally, last October, and after being billed over €9000 by the communidad, we were again allowed access. Our solicitor throws her hands up and says she's trying to get more info, but 'everyone's a crook'!

Obviously a much longer story than that, but not for this forum I guess :-ohcrap

So I went there, started to write the long saga (blaming you for sending me there of course) and had to leave it for a while because some clients turned up. Came back to it and the pc I was using had restarted thanks to an MS auto-update (the only pc in the building that's set to auto-update). )(-red

So I'll write it out in Word and copy/paste it next time.

Sad, we have all been stung here to some degree or another. 9k alot of money, no wonder a friend of mine (agent) was selling two Apts in your block cheap! Well I hope you get to enjoy your apt.

Don´t forget to get notified of Annual meetings and attend and vote and get you neighbours to vote too. Many apt ruling boards make lots of money ripping off owners because people often are unable or too lazy to attend so a majority of the few that attend run the complex for their benefit. Get or give proxy votes between the people you trust.
 
Thanks for the advice. Our Solicitor has our proxy vote (and that of many other owners when they discovered what a rottweiler she was!).

I'll get around to posting the sorry saga in The Meeting Place eventually.
