Freesat in Skiathos

i am trying to install a grundig freesat in skiathos. the house currently has a paid sky service that works fine complete with sat dish on the roof. plugged in the grundig freesat but it cannot locate signal. any advice of things to try? the freesat came from the uk but apparently it should work. i do not know if we can check the settings on the box. does it need to be changed to universal? appreciate any help
 
How is your Eurobird reception?

Do you know what size dish is on the roof? You say the current receiver (which make and model?) is working fine but is it only the subscription channels that are showing without problem? Specifically, can this receiver show the BBC channels and Channel 4?

I suspect that the dish might be too small for the FTA (free to air) channels that are on the 2D satellite. The subscription channels are on different co-located satellites with a much wider beam that needs a smaller dish. Your answers will confirm or eliminate this.
 
no idea what eurobird is? the signal strength for the sky channels is very good. thanks for trying to help - i am trrying to help my dad and save him some money before leavin tomorrow
 
hi thanks for response. i hada look and it looks about 1metre. its quite big. i was wondering whether there are settings on the box i can change. when yu try and do a search for the signal it does not go off the percent bar. it jst stays on 0%

There are four Satellites used by BSkyB and Freesat.

Astra 2A, 2B, 2D at 28.2E and Eurobird 1 at 28.5E.

The difference in position is not a problem for small dishes eg in the UK, but where you are large dishes are used.

The larger the dish, the narrower the beamwidth so if a dish is set for 28.2E it is possible that the satellite at 28.5E cannot be received adequately.

As that is where all the essential data for Freesat comes from, then inadequate reception means problems.

The Sky EPG comes form Astra 2A, which you can get well enough.

That's because all the Free to Air Channels like BBC and ITV are from Astra 2D, which is focussed on UK and difficult to get where you are without a much bigger dish.

It seems to me you are only getting Astra 2A nd 2B, possibly Eurobird, which is why you get "Sky".

Despite the Freesat EPG being on Eurobird, the Free Channels themselves are exactly the ones you cannot get eg BBC, ITV.

So with your current dish the Freesat box is u/s.

u/s = useless .................. not unless you fit a much, much, much bigger dish. Maybe not even then.

The bottom line is that BBC 2 (for example) on Freesat is the same Channel exactly as the one "on Sky".

So if you can't get it on a Sky box, you can't get it on a Freesat box.
